Claude Code Costs: Licenses, API Usage and Team Controls

Claude Code has no price of its own: it is included in every paid Claude plan and billed through the plan's usage. As of October 2026, that means Pro at $17 a month billed annually ($20 monthly), Max from $100 a month, Team at $20 per standard seat a month billed annually ($25 monthly) or $100 per premium seat with five times the usage, and Enterprise at $20 per seat a month billed annually with usage billed at API rates on top. On a metered route (Enterprise, the Claude Console or a cloud provider) Anthropic reports an average of about $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month across enterprise deployments.

This guide covers what each route costs, which controls cap spend, what drives consumption and how to estimate the first month. It does not maintain a model-by-model price table; those numbers come from Anthropic's pricing pages linked below and change. For the setup side, read Claude Code for a company; for the whole workspace, Claude pricing for a business.

Is Claude Code free?

No. Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Code under Pro and above and states the Free plan does not include it. Its FAQ also answers the add-on question: there is no Claude Code add-on, it is included in all paid plans and shares the plan's usage limits, and heavy coders can switch to pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account. Anthropic's free courses, Claude Code 101 and Claude Code in Action on Claude Academy, are the free part.

What does each Claude Code plan cost?

Prices are USD list prices as of October 2026 from the pricing page and Anthropic's Team plan and Enterprise plan articles:

One transition to know, and one place where Anthropic's pages differed as of October 17, 2026. The Enterprise plan article (September 1, 2026) says older contracts with Chat and Chat plus Claude Code seats, or Standard and Premium seats, keep those until renewal and then move to the single usage-based seat. The Claude Code cost guide, read the same day, still describes Enterprise usage drawing from Standard and Premium seat allowances. Both agree that admins set spend limits and that unrenewed contracts keep their allowances, so confirm which model your agreement uses before budgeting from the table.

What are the API rates behind usage-based billing?

On Enterprise, Console and cloud routes, Claude Code consumption is priced per million tokens at the rates on Anthropic's API pricing page. As of October 2026 the current models are Claude Fable 5.1 at $10 input and $50 output per million tokens, Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20, Claude Sonnet 5.5 at $2 and $10, and Claude Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 and $0.50 for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Prompt-cache reads cost a fraction of the input price (0.05x on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5), which matters because Claude Code resends the conversation on every turn and caches it. US-only inference adds a 1.1x multiplier. The practical lesson is that model choice is the largest single lever: Sonnet handles most coding tasks and costs half of Opus per token; Anthropic's cost guide says to reserve Opus for architectural decisions and multi-step reasoning.

What does a developer actually consume?

Anthropic's cost management guide gives the only published baseline: across enterprise deployments, about $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month, with 90 percent of users staying under $30 per active day. It also says per-developer cost varies widely with model, codebase size and habits such as running several instances or automation, and tells teams to start with a small pilot group and measure before rolling out. The drivers it names:

  • Long sessions. Claude Code sends the full conversation with every request; a one-line question in a session open all day still carries the day's history, at the cached rate.
  • Cache misses. The cache lifetime is an hour on a subscription and five minutes on usage credits, an API key or a cloud provider; the first message after a break reprocesses the whole context.
  • Model choice. Opus left as the default is one of the two usual causes of surprise bills, alongside sessions never cleared.
  • Extended thinking. Thinking tokens bill as output and cannot be turned off on Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 or the Fable models, though the effort level can be lowered.
  • Subagents, agent teams and scheduled tasks. Each subagent sends its own requests; agent teams use roughly seven times the tokens of a standard session when teammates run in plan mode; a scheduled task fires with the full context even while the session is idle.
  • MCP servers and a long CLAUDE.md. Tool definitions and instructions loaded at session start are paid for on every turn; Anthropic suggests keeping CLAUDE.md under 200 lines and moving workflow instructions into skills.

Plan mode deserves a mention because so many people search for it alongside pricing. It is a permission mode, not a billing plan: Claude reads and explores but does not edit until you approve its approach. Anthropic lists it as a cost habit, because an agreed plan prevents expensive rework when the first direction is wrong.

Which team controls cap the spend?

RouteSee spendCap spendPer-user numbers

OpenTelemetry export works on every route and is the only option that streams per-user token and cost figures into your own monitoring in near real time. Developers see their own usage with the /usage command, which also attributes recent usage to skills, subagents, plugins and MCP servers on paid plans. If your contract has negotiated rates, the modelPricing managed setting makes those local figures match the invoice; it changes what Claude Code reports, not what Anthropic charges.

How do you estimate a month?

An illustrative estimate for a company with eight developers and twelve other staff, using only the list prices and the published baseline above (not a quote, and not a NetSys price):

  1. Seats. On Team, eight premium seats at $100 and twelve standard seats at $20, billed annually, is $1,040 a month before tax. On Enterprise, twenty seats at $20 is $400 a month in seat fees, with every token billed on top.
  2. Consumption. Anthropic's enterprise average of $150 to $250 per developer per month puts eight active developers at $1,200 to $2,000 a month on a metered route. On Team that consumption is inside the premium allowance until someone hits a weekly limit, at which point usage credits and your spend limits take over.
  3. Range. Team: about $1,040 a month plus any usage credits you authorize. Enterprise: about $400 in seats plus $1,200 to $2,000 in developer usage plus the much smaller chat and Cowork usage of the other twelve, so roughly $1,600 to $2,400 before that smaller usage and any volume terms.
  4. Then measure. Run a four-week pilot with three developers, export the spend report or the Console dashboard weekly, and replace the baseline with your own per-developer number before you buy the rest.

The hidden cost is not tokens. It is the engineer time to set managed settings, allowlists and review gates, and the training that turns a licensed seat into a used one. Budget for both.

How NetSys helps a team control Claude Code costs

NetSys builds custom applications and reporting on Anthropic Claude for client teams and sets Claude Code up for companies under our Claude Code consulting service: plan and route selection, spend limits and usage reporting, managed settings that set the default model and block the expensive habits, and developer training. Setup and training are quoted after a scoping call; where the goal is an internal tool rather than a developer workflow, custom AI applications covers it, quoted as a fixed-scope project with an estimate of monthly running costs before work begins.

Scope a Claude Code pilot and we will size the seats, the route and the first month's budget with you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code included in Claude Pro?

Yes. As of October 2026 Pro includes Claude Code and shares the plan's usage with chat; Pro is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly. For company work, a Team or Enterprise seat puts the same tool under your administration and data terms.

What is the Claude Code team plan?

There is no separate Claude Code team plan. Claude Team ($20 per standard seat or $100 per premium seat a month, billed annually, 2 to 150 seats) includes Claude Code for every member, and premium seats carry five times the usage for developers who live in it.

What does Claude Code enterprise pricing look like?

Enterprise is $20 per seat a month billed annually with a 20-seat minimum self-serve (50 through sales), and, per the Enterprise plan article dated September 1, 2026, all Claude Code usage is billed at standard API rates on consumption, with admin spend limits per organization and per user. Sales-assisted plans add invoicing and monthly billing in arrears.

Can we cap what a developer spends?

Yes on every route: spend limits per organization, group or individual on Team and Enterprise, workspace spend limits on the Console, and budgets in your cloud console on Bedrock, Google Cloud or Foundry. When a developer hits a limit, the message names which one, and an admin raises it in organization settings.

Is Claude Code cheaper on the API than on a subscription?

It depends on volume. A premium Team seat is a fixed $100 a month with a large allowance; the API baseline of $150 to $250 per developer per month is metered and has no ceiling unless you set one. Light users are cheaper on standard seats, heavy and automated users need measuring, and the pilot tells you which you have.
