Office 2021 End of Support: What Small Businesses Do Now

Open office desk drawer full of old Office 2021 install discs, ahead of Office 2021 end of support for small businesses

Office 2021 stops getting security updates on October 13, 2026. Microsoft says plainly there will be "no extension and no extended security updates". Your Word, Excel, and Outlook 2021 will keep opening the next morning. They just won't get patched again.

For most small businesses, the fix is moving those machines to the Microsoft 365 apps you may already be paying for. For the few PCs that truly need a one-time license, Office 2024 buys you three more years. Doing nothing is the one option that doesn't work.

What happens when Office 2021 support ends?

After October 13, 2026, Microsoft stops shipping security fixes, bug fixes, and technical support for Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021. The apps still launch and still open files. But every Office vulnerability found after that date stays open on those machines for good, and Outlook's connection to Microsoft 365 is no longer supported.

Microsoft's own wording on its end-of-support notice: "All of your Office 2021 apps may continue to function. However, you could expose yourself to serious and potentially harmful security risks."

That's the trap. Nothing breaks, so nobody notices, and the unpatched copies sit there for years.

Which versions are affected?

Everything with "2021" in the name:

  • Office Home & Student 2021 and Office Home & Business 2021, the retail boxes.
  • Office LTSC 2021, the volume-licensed version many offices bought in bulk.
  • The perpetual versions of Publisher 2021, which lose support the same day.

Microsoft 365 Apps, the subscription version, isn't affected. It updates itself and stays supported as long as you stay on a current build.

Still on Office 2016 or 2019? You're further behind than you think. Microsoft ended support for those versions connecting to Microsoft 365 services back in October 2023.

Will Outlook 2021 still connect to Microsoft 365?

Probably, for a while. Supported, no. Microsoft lists Office LTSC 2021 as supported for Microsoft 365 connectivity until October 13, 2026, and its guidance on anything older is blunt:

"Older Office versions might still be able to connect to Microsoft 365 services, but that connectivity isn't supported."

In practice, that means Exchange Online, OneDrive, and Teams keep changing and nobody tests against Outlook 2021 anymore. Things degrade quietly: sign-in prompts that loop, features that never show up, a sync problem Microsoft support won't touch. If Outlook is how your firm runs, that's not a risk worth carrying.

Why does an unpatched Office matter so much?

Because Office is where your staff open files from strangers. Invoices, resumes, purchase orders, "updated W-9" attachments. A malicious document only needs one unpatched hole in Word or Excel to run code on that PC.

Your antivirus and email filtering still help. They don't replace a vendor fixing the hole. And an unsupported Office build is an easy finding for an auditor or a cyber insurance underwriter.

What are your options?

1. Move to Microsoft 365 Apps (the right answer for most offices)

If you already pay for Microsoft 365 Business Standard or Business Premium, your users are licensed for the desktop apps. Uninstall Office 2021, install Microsoft 365 Apps, and you're done paying for Office twice.

If you're on Business Basic or an email-only plan, you'll need to step up a tier. Check current pricing first. Microsoft raised Business Basic and Business Standard prices on July 1, 2026, and we broke down the numbers in our post on the 2026 Microsoft 365 price increase.

2. Buy Office 2024 for machines that can't run a subscription

Some PCs need a one-time license: a shop-floor workstation, a kiosk, a machine kept offline on purpose. Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 are supported until October 2029.

Watch the edition. Microsoft's launch announcement lists Office Home 2024 at $149.99 and Office Home & Business 2024 at $249.99. Only Home & Business includes Outlook and the rights to use the apps for commercial purposes. The cheaper box isn't licensed for your business.

And you're back here in 2029. Plan for that now.

3. Do nothing

It costs nothing today. It's also the option that leaves every unpatched copy of Word one bad attachment away from a breach. Don't.

What about Publisher?

Publisher is already gone for subscribers. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 users lost access to Publisher on October 1, 2026, and they can no longer open or edit .pub files in it.

Perpetual Publisher 2021 keeps working but loses support on October 13 with the rest of Office 2021. If your office still makes flyers or newsletters in Publisher, convert those files to Word or PDF now, while you still have a working copy.

How do you find every Office 2021 install?

Don't guess. Check it three ways:

  1. On a single PC: open Word, go to File, then Account. The product name under "Product Information" tells you the version.
  2. Across the fleet: pull an installed-software report from Intune or your RMM tool and filter for "2021."
  3. From licensing: look for volume-license keys or retail receipts for Office 2021. Those machines are the ones that need action.

Then match each machine to an option above. Most will go to Microsoft 365 Apps. A handful might get Office 2024. None should stay on 2021.

The order that keeps this painless

  1. Inventory this week. Every PC, every Office version.
  2. Confirm licensing. Who's already licensed for Microsoft 365 Apps and who needs an upgrade.
  3. Convert Publisher files before anyone needs them.
  4. Swap the apps after hours. Outlook profiles, signatures, and add-ins are where the surprises live, so test one machine first.
  5. Remove Office 2021 completely. Two versions side by side is how you end up with a stray unpatched copy.

If you'd rather not run this yourself, our Microsoft 365 management team handles the inventory, licensing, and swap as one project. Still on Windows 10 as well? Fix both at once. Our Windows 10 end-of-support guide covers that side.

Frequently asked questions

Will Office 2021 stop working after October 13, 2026?

No. The apps keep launching and opening files. What stops is security patches, bug fixes, and Microsoft support. That's the danger: nothing visibly breaks, so unpatched copies stay in use for years. Any vulnerability found after October 13 stays open on those machines permanently.

Is there an Extended Security Update program for Office 2021?

No. Unlike Windows 10, Office 2021 gets no paid extension. Microsoft states there will be no extension and no extended security updates. October 13, 2026 is the last day of support, full stop. The only way to stay patched is to move to Microsoft 365 Apps or Office 2024.

Can I keep using Outlook 2021 with Exchange Online?

It will likely keep connecting for now, but Microsoft no longer supports it after October 13, 2026. Microsoft doesn't test new Exchange Online changes against older Office versions, so expect gradual problems with sign-in, sync, and new features. If Outlook is critical to your business, upgrade it first.

Should a small business buy Office 2024 or Microsoft 365?

Microsoft 365 for almost everyone. The apps stay current automatically, and Business Standard bundles them with business email and OneDrive. Office 2024 fits machines that must run a one-time license, like an offline workstation. Buy Home & Business, not Home: only Home & Business includes Outlook and commercial use rights.
