The short answer

NetSys provides IT support for wealth management firms in Summit, NJ: a help desk for advisers and operations staff, managed and encrypted laptops and phones, Microsoft 365 with Conditional Access, hardware-key sign-in for custodian and portfolio platforms where they support it, encrypted client communication, backups, plus the written incident response program and service-provider oversight that the 2024 Regulation S-P amendments demand. Because Summit is within our in-person radius, an engineer visits for network, hardware and relocation work, though most requests are resolved remotely. The fee is set per user per month once we have assessed the practice, and there is no long-term contract.

Advising families from downtown Summit

Summit is Union County's northernmost city, home to 22,719 people at the 2020 census, and its downtown along Springfield Avenue mixes shops and restaurants with upstairs offices for advisers, accountants and attorneys. Summit station, where NJ Transit's Morristown Line and Gladstone Branch meet, puts Penn Station about 35 minutes away on an express, which matters for practices whose clients and staff also work in Manhattan. The city's corporate base is substantial for its size: Bristol Myers Squibb's campus is the largest corporate taxpayer, Kenvue opened its 290,000-square-foot global headquarters at 1 Kenvue Way in March 2025, and Overlook Medical Center anchors a cluster of physician practices. For a wealth practice that can mean clients with equity compensation, concentrated stock positions and complicated households, served by a small firm that holds account numbers, tax returns and estate documents for hundreds of families. The technology is mostly cloud: custodian portals, a portfolio-management and CRM platform, financial planning software, e-signature and Microsoft 365. The risk is concentrated in people and their devices.

On-site and remote support for Summit offices

Summit is a 45-to-60-minute drive from our Park Slope office, through the Holland Tunnel and out I-78 to Route 24, and longer at rush hour. That puts it well inside our on-site area. Engineers come to the office to set up a new adviser's desk, replace a firewall or switch, fix the conference-room screen before a client review, rewire a closet or move the practice to a new suite. Day to day, most requests are handled remotely: a locked custodian login, a phone that stopped syncing mail, a scanner that will not file to the client folder. A ransomware alert, a dead line or mail that has stopped flowing is routed to the engineer assigned to your firm, and for critical faults our written terms promise a call within ten minutes and remote work within thirty.

Custodian access, client data and the home office

An advisory firm's most sensitive systems sit in a few places: the custodian portals that move money, the portfolio-management and CRM platform, the document vault with tax returns and trust papers, and email. We put each behind strong sign-in, using hardware security keys or an authenticator app where the custodian supports them, and Entra ID Conditional Access so accounts can only be reached from managed, encrypted devices. Shared credentials move into Keeper with access by role. Client documents travel through a portal or encrypted email, not attachments. Advisers who work from home or meet clients at their kitchen tables get the same protection on the road, including a phone hotspot instead of the client's Wi-Fi. And because a fraudulent wire is hard to claw back, any request to move money or change instructions is confirmed by a call to a known number.

Exams, vendors and keeping the practice open

SEC and state examiners ask for evidence, not assurances: the written policies, the incident response program, the list of service providers with access to client data and how each is overseen, training records, access reviews and backup tests. We keep those records current as part of the service, so an exam request is answered from existing files rather than reconstructed. Continuity is the other half. After Sandy in October 2012, JCP&L had to restore nearly its whole system, and Summit residents said outside crews did not reach some streets until about day 13. A practice that runs in the cloud can keep working from anywhere if its laptops, phones and sign-ins are ready, so we test remote work as part of the continuity plan and keep a backup internet path at the office.

The rules that apply

Rules for wealth managers in Summit

SEC Regulation S-P (amended 2024)

Adopted on May 16, 2024, the amendments add a written incident response program to the safeguards rule. A covered adviser must be able to detect, contain and recover from unauthorized access to customer information, and must tell affected clients as soon as practicable, and no later than 30 days, once it learns that sensitive customer information was or likely was accessed. Vendors handling that information must be overseen and must report a breach to the firm within 72 hours. The compliance date was December 3, 2025 for larger entities and June 3, 2026 for smaller ones, which includes advisers below $1.5 billion in assets.

SEC Regulation S-ID (identity theft red flags)

Investment advisers registered with the SEC that hold covered accounts must develop and implement a written identity theft prevention program. For a practice the red flags are often digital: a client email account taken over and used to request a distribution, a changed phone number just before a wire, or a login from an unfamiliar device. Our alerting and callback procedures give the program something real to point to.

New Jersey Bureau of Securities

Smaller advisers registered with New Jersey rather than the SEC answer to the Bureau of Securities in the Division of Consumer Affairs, which publishes examination and filing requirements for the firms it oversees. Examiners at either level look for the same basics: written supervisory and security procedures, evidence they are followed, and protection of client records. We keep those records in a form you can hand over.

N.J.S.A. 56:8-163 and the privacy act carve-out

Advisory firms hold exactly the data New Jersey's breach statute covers: names with Social Security and account numbers. When notice is required, the firm reports to the Division of State Police before notifying clients. The New Jersey Data Privacy Act, by contrast, exempts financial institutions subject to Title V of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, an exemption your counsel can confirm for the practice. Common Questions

Wealth Management & RIAs in Summit: FAQs

Who provides IT support for wealth managers in Summit, NJ?

NetSys does, from our office in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with engineers who come to Summit when the office needs hands. We support advisers and operations staff with a help desk, managed devices, Microsoft 365, security, backups and the compliance records examiners ask for, and we coordinate with your custodian, portfolio and CRM vendors. Your firm gets a named account manager with a cell number that is actually answered, and the agreement runs month to month.

Do you provide on-site IT support for wealth managers in Summit?

Yes. Summit is inside our on-site area, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Park Slope by car depending on traffic. Engineers come to your office for new desks and phones, firewalls and switches, Wi-Fi, conference-room equipment, cabling and moves. Most day-to-day problems, from a locked account to a mail sync issue, are fixed remotely first because that is faster for your staff. The help desk has engineers on it every day of the week, 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern.

What does the amended Regulation S-P require of a small RIA now?

Smaller advisers, those with under $1.5 billion in assets, have had to comply since June 3, 2026. In practice that means a written incident response program, procedures to notify affected clients within 30 days of becoming aware of an incident involving sensitive customer information, oversight of service providers, which must report breaches to you within 72 hours, and records showing all of it. We draft the technical parts with your compliance consultant and keep the evidence current.

Can you secure advisers who work from home and visit clients?

Yes. Laptops and phones are enrolled in Intune, encrypted and checked before they can reach client data, so the protection travels with the device. Advisers connect through their own hotspot rather than a client's or a hotel's Wi-Fi, present from a locked-down laptop, and send documents through a portal or encrypted email. If a device is lost, we wipe it remotely and revoke its sessions. Home offices get a basic review of the router and of who else uses the network.

What does IT support cost for a Summit wealth management firm?

It is a per user per month price set after an assessment. The fee moves with the number of advisers and staff, the devices each uses, the custodians and platforms you connect to, whether any servers remain in the office, the compliance evidence you need for Regulation S-P and exams, and whether you want us on site on a regular schedule. An office move or similar project gets its own quote once scoped, and the agreement itself runs month to month.

Do you work with our custodian and portfolio software vendors?

Yes, as your technical contact. The custodians and software companies support their platforms; we handle the devices, browsers, sign-in methods, integrations and network your staff use to reach them, and we open and follow cases when something breaks. We also keep a register of every vendor with access to client data, what it holds and the date of its last review, which is the service-provider oversight record Regulation S-P now expects.
