Claude Pro is an individual subscription, $17 per month billed annually or $20 billed monthly as of October 2026, and it belongs to the person who signed up. Claude Team is a company workspace for 2 to 150 people at $20 per standard seat per month billed annually ($25 monthly), with single sign-on, admin controls, central billing and Anthropic's commercial data terms. For a business the difference is not the model, which is the same, but ownership: on Team the company decides who is in, what connects to company data and what happens to the work when someone leaves. Once two or three people use Claude for work, Team is the plan to be on.
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, available as chat on web, desktop and mobile, as Claude Cowork for multi-step work on files and connected tools, and as Claude Code for developers. This page is for the company that started with a few Pro accounts and has outgrown them, and it also answers the related question of a Claude Max subscription versus a Team premium seat. The next decision up, Team versus Enterprise, is covered in Claude Team vs Enterprise, and the whole budget in Claude pricing for a business.

Why does ownership matter more than features?
A Pro account is a consumer product. The person who created it holds the chats, the projects and the memory, and the company has no console to look into it, no way to remove it and no way to stop a leaver taking it with them. Anthropic's consumer privacy article says personal chats and coding sessions are used for training when the user chooses to allow it, which is a setting the company cannot see, let alone enforce. Three employees sharing one Pro login to save money is worse: one password, no record of who did what.
Team reverses each of those. The company is the account holder. Anthropic's commercial privacy article says inputs and outputs from commercial products are not used for training by default. Owners add and remove members, claim the email domain so that nobody can set up a stray account on it, and decide which connectors reach company files. When a person leaves, the seat is removed, which is why work should live in shared projects rather than personal chats.
What administration and data policies does Team add?
- Identity. SSO, domain capture and just-in-time provisioning, so accounts come from your identity provider. Automatic deprovisioning through SCIM is an Enterprise feature.
- Roles and spend. Owners and members, with spend caps at organization and user level on prepaid usage credits.
- Connectors. The built-in connectors for Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and Slack are enabled by owners for the organization; custom connectors can be added only by Owners and Primary Owners.
- Cowork. An organization-wide toggle, separate control of cloud sessions, the option to require trusted devices, and the ability to turn off persistent "always allow" approvals.
- Sharing. Projects can be shared with "Can view" or "Can edit" roles, by email, by list or organization-wide, and owners can turn sharing off. Skills can be provisioned organization-wide and published to a library with a "Requires review" setting.
- Retention. Anthropic's defaults for commercial products: deleted chats leave history immediately and back-end storage within 30 days; feedback ratings are kept up to five years, de-linked from the user, and Owners can switch the rating option off.
What Team does not add: audit logs, the Compliance API, custom retention, custom roles, customer-managed keys and the HIPAA-ready configuration. Those are Enterprise features, and a company that needs them should skip Team.
Claude Team vs Max: when does a premium seat replace a Max subscription?
Claude Max is the individual plan for heavy users, from $100 a month with tiers at 5x and 20x Pro usage and $100 to $200 a month in API credits, as of October 2026. A Team premium seat is $100 a month billed annually or $125 monthly, with 5x the usage of a standard seat. The usage is comparable at the lower Max tier; the difference is again ownership. A premium seat sits inside the company workspace with SSO, the organization's connectors and policies, and a seat the company can reassign. Max belongs to the person.
So: a founder working alone, or a contractor who bills several clients, may be right on Max. An employee who lives in Cowork all day belongs on a Team premium seat, mixed in with standard seats for everyone else. Anthropic's pricing page gives Claude Fable 5.1, the model it recommends for demanding reasoning, 50 percent of weekly limits on both Max tiers and on Team premium seats; it does not print a per-seat price for the Max 20x tier, so compare that one on Anthropic's page before deciding.
What happens when staff move from Pro to Team?
When a person accepts a Team invitation with the same email address as their Pro account, Anthropic's migration article describes a choice: keep both accounts, or use the organization account only and either bring the data or delete it. Bringing the data moves chats, projects with their files and instructions, uploads and memory into the organization; the Pro subscription is cancelled and refunded pro rata. Custom skills, connector sign-ins, published artifacts and public share links do not move, and the transfer cannot be reversed. The step-by-step version, including Apple App Store subscriptions and Enterprise domain claiming, is in moving personal Claude work into a company workspace.
Decision examples
Illustrative situations, not client stories:
- A two-person studio. Team still fits: the minimum is two members, and the extra $3 a month per person over annual Pro buys SSO, shared projects and a workspace that survives a partner change.
- A 12-person agency with four Pro accounts on expense reports. Move everyone to Team standard seats, migrate the four accounts, claim the domain so no more personal accounts appear, and write a one-page usage policy.
- A 30-person firm with one analyst on Max. Team with 29 standard seats and one premium seat; the analyst keeps most of the usage and the company gains control of the connectors that analyst was using.
- A 25-person practice handling health records. Neither Pro nor Team. Only Enterprise can enable Anthropic's HIPAA-ready configuration, so go straight to Enterprise.
Claude Team vs individual accounts: a checklist
- Count the people using Claude for work, including the ones paying personally. Two or more means Team.
- List what company data has already been pasted into personal accounts, and decide whether that history should be migrated or left behind.
- Pick the Owners: the business lead and whoever administers identity.
- Decide the connectors you will allow, and get the Microsoft 365 Global Administrator consent lined up if you use it.
- Choose seats: standard for most, premium for the few heavy Cowork or Claude Code users.
- Set the usage policy and the pilot measures, then send the invitations with migration instructions attached.

Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Team better than Pro for a business?
Yes, because the company owns the workspace. Team adds SSO, domain capture, admin roles, spend caps, shared projects, an organization skill library and commercial data terms; Pro has none of those. The per-person price difference is small as of October 2026.
Can a business just buy Claude Pro for employees?
It can, but each account belongs to the employee, the company cannot administer or remove it, and the consumer training setting is outside the company's control. For anything beyond a one-person trial, Team is the right shape.
Does Claude Team cost more than Pro?
Slightly. Pro is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly; a Team standard seat is $20 billed annually or $25 monthly, as of October 2026. A premium seat at $100 or $125 is for heavy users.
What is the difference between Claude Max and a Team premium seat?
Max is an individual plan from $100 a month with 5x or 20x Pro usage and personal API credits. A premium seat is $100 or $125 a month inside a Team workspace, with 5x a standard seat's usage, the organization's SSO, connectors and policies, and a seat the company can reassign.
Does Claude Team include Claude Code and Cowork?
Yes. Both are included in Team seats and share the seat's usage limit. Cloud Cowork sessions on Team are in beta as of October 2026, and owners control whether Cowork is on.
Can we mix standard and premium seats?
Yes. Anthropic's pricing page says seats can be mixed, so most staff sit on standard seats and the few heavy users on premium.
What happens to an employee's chats when they leave?
On Team, an owner removes the member, which is why work should live in shared projects rather than personal chats. On Pro the company has nothing to remove: the account and its contents belong to the person.
