Azure-Hosted Systems to Dynamics 365 Business Central

A business running its operations on systems hosted in Azure moved to Dynamics 365 Business Central. NetSys planned the migration, moved the data and cut the business over with its history intact.

The Challenge

Running a line-of-business system on Azure virtual machines keeps it available, but it still has to be patched, backed up, upgraded and paid for as infrastructure. The client had reached the point where the system itself, not the hosting, was the limit: the finance and operations workflows it supported had outgrown it.

Dynamics 365 Business Central offered a supported, cloud-native replacement, but only if the migration preserved the historical records the business relied on and did not stall daily operations during the switch.

What NetSys Did

The approach

1

Assessment and mapping

We inventoried the data, integrations and reports in the existing system and mapped each to its Business Central equivalent, flagging what would move as-is, what needed restructuring and what could be retired.

2

Data migration

Master data and transaction history were migrated in stages and validated against the source after each stage, with the finance team reconciling balances before anything went live.

3

Configuration and integrations

Business Central was configured around the client's real workflows, and the connections other systems depended on were rebuilt against the new platform.

4

Cutover and decommission

The switch ran on a planned schedule with a parallel check period. Afterward the Azure-hosted environment was decommissioned so the business stopped paying for infrastructure it no longer used.

Deployed Stack
  • Dynamics 365 Business Central
  • Microsoft Azure (source environment)
  • Data migration and reconciliation tooling
  • Microsoft 365 and Entra ID
  • Rebuilt integrations
Outcomes

What changed

  • Finance and operations run on a supported, cloud-native platform
  • Historical records carried over and reconciled before go-live
  • The Azure-hosted environment was retired after cutover
