Cybersecurity Services in Hawaii
Attackers have already reached a Hawaii college, Honolulu's transit operator, a cancer research center, a dental group and Hawaiian Airlines. NetSys protects Hawaii organizations with managed detection and response, identity controls, email security and tested recovery, run remotely from Brooklyn with 24/7 monitoring and an emergency path that does not wait for business hours.
The short answer
NetSys provides cybersecurity services to Hawaii organizations remotely: ThreatDown managed detection and response on every endpoint, Entra ID Conditional Access with multifactor sign-in, Barracuda email protection with DMARC, Rapid7 InsightVM vulnerability scanning, KnowBe4 phishing training, Keeper password management and immutable Datto or Veeam backups. We also offer a free external penetration test within an agreed scope. Monitoring and incident response run 24/7 from Brooklyn, and NetSys does not send engineers on site in Hawaii. The staffed help desk keeps 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern hours, and security is priced per user per month after an assessment.

How cybersecurity is delivered for Hawaii organizations
Security work is remote by nature, and for Hawaii it is entirely remote: NetSys does not send engineers to any island. ThreatDown agents report each endpoint's activity to analysts who can isolate a machine as soon as a threat is confirmed, at any hour. Identity is managed in Entra ID, email passes through Barracuda, and firewalls are configured and logged through Meraki or Fortinet cloud consoles. The time difference works in your favor overnight. When a suspicious sign-in hits a Honolulu account at 11 p.m., it is already early morning in New York and our engineers are starting their day. Incident handling follows a written runbook that names who at your company approves shutdowns, who calls the cyber insurer and who speaks to staff, so nobody improvises those decisions at midnight. Monitoring runs 24/7 from Brooklyn, and so does emergency service. Our staffed help-desk hours are 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, seven days a week. The proposal states severe-incident escalation, authorized remediation and any other after-hours work.
Attacks Hawaii has already seen
Hawaii's public incidents read like a catalog of current methods. In June 2023 the NoEscape group hit Hawaii Community College, and the University of Hawaii paid to have stolen data on about 28,000 people destroyed. In June 2024 an intrusion at Oahu Transit Services knocked TheBus and Handi-Van websites offline for days and forced a cleanup of hundreds of workstations. Hawaiian Airlines identified an attack on its IT systems on June 23, 2025, at a time when federal agencies and security firms were warning that Scattered Spider was targeting airlines by impersonating employees to help desks. In August 2025 ransomware struck the University of Hawaii Cancer Center, affecting nearly 1.2 million people, and in July 2026 Hawaii Family Dental found an intrusion affecting 45,853 patients that the Qilin group later claimed. Even undersea infrastructure is a target: in 2022 federal agents disrupted an intrusion, made with stolen credentials, into servers tied to an Oahu cable.
The controls that answer those methods
Each of those incidents maps to a control we put in place early. Stolen or guessed credentials are blunted by multifactor sign-in on every account, Conditional Access rules that block sign-ins from unexpected countries or unmanaged devices, and phishing-resistant methods for administrators. Help desk impersonation meets a verification procedure: before we reset a password or a multifactor method, the caller is confirmed through a callback to a number on file or a manager's approval in Teams. Ransomware runs into ThreatDown detection on every endpoint and backups held on immutable storage and off the island, so an attacker with admin rights still cannot delete them. Barracuda filters inbound mail, and DMARC reduces the spoofed messages that often start wire-fraud attempts. Rapid7 InsightVM finds unpatched internet-facing systems, KnowBe4 trains staff on a regular schedule, and Keeper ends the shared password spreadsheet.
Island risks: card payments, guest networks and slower recovery
Some exposure is particular to Hawaii. A visitor economy that drew 9.64 million people in 2025, by the state's preliminary count, runs on card payments at hotels, tour operators, restaurants and shops, which makes PCI DSS v4.0.1 a working requirement; the standard's 51 future-dated requirements became mandatory on March 31, 2025. Guest Wi-Fi belongs on its own network, away from the property-management system and staff devices. Recovery is the other difference. Restoring a large server image from a mainland cloud over undersea fiber takes longer than restoring from a device in the office, and replacement hardware has to cross the Pacific, so we pair a local backup appliance for quick restores with an immutable cloud copy for the worst case. The runbook also lists who can approve decisions if the owner is traveling between islands when an incident starts.
Hawaii breach, insurance and industry rules
Hawaii's breach statute defines a security breach as unauthorized access to and acquisition of unencrypted or unredacted records containing personal information, or encrypted records taken along with the key, so encryption changes what an incident means legally. After a breach, HRS 487N-2 requires notice to affected residents without unreasonable delay, plus written notice to the State Office of Consumer Protection and the consumer reporting agencies if more than 1,000 people are notified at once. Insurance licensees covered by HRS 431:3B-302 must tell the commissioner within three business days of determining that a cybersecurity event involving 250 or more consumers occurred. Clinics answer to the HIPAA Security Rule, merchants to PCI DSS, and defense suppliers to DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171, with CMMC Phase 2 suspended since July 13, 2026 but self-assessments and SPRS scores still required. This is general information, not legal advice.
The first 30 days of a security engagement
The engagement can open with the free external penetration test, run within a scope we agree in writing, alongside a review of your Microsoft 365 secure score, sign-in logs, firewall rules and backup settings. Within two weeks you get findings ranked by risk and a plan to close them. Deployment comes next: ThreatDown replaces legacy antivirus, multifactor sign-in becomes mandatory, legacy authentication is switched off, Barracuda takes over mail filtering, DMARC starts in monitoring mode, and backups move to immutable storage with a restore test to prove them. Staff receive a short briefing and their first simulated phishing message. By day 30 you hold an incident response runbook with your Hawaii contacts and insurer details, an asset list in IT Glue and a schedule for recurring vulnerability scans and reviews with your account manager.
Cybersecurity in Hawaii: what NetSys delivers
Watch and respond
- ThreatDown MDR and EDR on every device, with a 24/7 team that isolates and investigates rather than emails
- Rapid7 InsightIDR or Microsoft Sentinel collecting identity, email, endpoint and firewall logs so an intrusion is visible in one place
Harden the tenant and the people
- Microsoft Defender for Business, Entra ID Conditional Access and phishing-resistant sign-in for finance staff
- Legacy authentication off, dormant accounts closed, forwarding rules and consent grants reviewed monthly
Measure and recover
- Rapid7 InsightVM scans of the internal and external footprint, with a monthly fix list
- Managed firewall with intrusion prevention, segmentation and vendor access that is logged and switched off when the work ends
Law office: layered security on Microsoft 365 with cloud-to-cloud backup
A 25-attorney firm needed client confidences protected better than a closet server could manage. Alongside a Microsoft 365 migration, NetSys layered anti-phishing and email threat protection, DNS filtering, multifactor authentication on every account and endpoint protection across attorney devices in the office and remote, and established independent cloud-to-cloud backup of the entire tenant because the recycle bin is not a backup strategy for privileged material. The firm reported 82% fewer IT support incidents per month within two quarters.

What cybersecurity costs in Hawaii
Cybersecurity is priced per user per month when it runs as an ongoing service, and per project for an assessment or a remediation. What moves the number: how many devices and identities are in scope, how much incident remediation and recovery is needed beyond the monitoring and authorized MDR actions in scope, which compliance standard the evidence has to satisfy, and whether the Microsoft 365 tenant is already on Business Premium or the security tooling comes from us. The free external penetration test costs nothing and runs remotely before any of that. Our managed IT pricing page explains how the fee is built.
Who this fits, and who it does not
Best fit: businesses with enough people, money movement or regulated data that a breach would hurt, and no security team of their own: professional practices, healthcare groups, importers, financial firms, nonprofits and agencies holding client credentials. Companies with an internal IT person fit as a co-managed arrangement.

Cybersecurity in Hawaii: FAQs
How does cybersecurity work for Hawaii organizations?
From Brooklyn, over the network. ThreatDown analysts monitor endpoints 24/7, our engineers manage identity, email and firewall policy in cloud consoles, and incidents follow a runbook agreed in advance. NetSys sends no engineers on site in Hawaii, so containment is remote: isolating devices, disabling accounts, blocking traffic at the firewall and restoring from backup. If equipment has to be swapped, a preconfigured replacement ships and your staff connect it. Ransomware and other severe incidents go straight to your dedicated engineer.
How much do cybersecurity services cost in Hawaii?
Security is priced per user per month after an assessment, either inside managed IT or as a security-only agreement alongside an internal IT person. The figure depends on users and devices, servers and cloud workloads in scope, compliance reporting for HIPAA, PCI DSS or DFARS, and whether you want a vCISO for policies and board reporting. The external penetration test within an agreed scope is free; deeper testing, remediation projects and hardware such as new firewalls are quoted separately after scoping.
Which cybersecurity requirements apply to businesses in Hawaii?
Any business holding Hawaii residents' personal information falls under HRS chapter 487N for breach notice and HRS 487R for disposing of records. Insurance licensees add the state's insurance data security law, HRS article 431:3B, including a comprehensive written information security program. Industry rules sit on top: HIPAA for health care, PCI DSS for card payments, the FTC Safeguards Rule for tax preparers and other financial firms, and DFARS 252.204-7012 with NIST SP 800-171 for defense suppliers. We map each requirement to the control and evidence that shows it.
Does being in Hawaii change our ransomware recovery plan?
Yes, in three ways. Restores from a mainland cloud cross undersea fiber, so we keep a local, immutable backup appliance for speed and a cloud copy for disasters. Replacement servers and laptops take longer to arrive, so the plan leans on cloud-hosted work and laptops that can be rebuilt remotely through Autopilot. And a cable fault or storm can cut connectivity during an incident, so the runbook covers working offline and who decides when. NetSys has handled more than 30 ransomware incidents in three years and fully recovered every one.
Can you test our defenses before we commit?
Yes. NetSys offers a free external penetration test: a remote test of your internet-facing systems, such as the firewall, VPN, remote desktop gateways, email services and public websites, within a scope we agree in writing first. You receive the findings and the fixes we recommend, with no obligation to sign an agreement. Internal network testing, web application testing and social engineering exercises are separate paid engagements. For a Hawaii organization the test runs from Brooklyn over the internet, the same vantage point any outside attacker has.
See what an attacker sees before they do.
The free assessment is a remote external penetration test, limited to the information available to NetSys and the external scope we agree with you. Internal reviews and ongoing security management are scoped separately.
