How cybersecurity is delivered in Essex County

Protection runs continuously and remotely: endpoint agents report to analysts, sign-in logs feed Conditional Access, and scans run against every server and firewall each week. On-site work is for the physical layer. Engineers reach downtown Newark in about half an hour from our Park Slope office and the West Orange, Montclair, Roseland and Livingston offices in 40 to 50 minutes off-peak. That puts them at your door to replace a firewall, move cameras and guest Wi-Fi onto their own network segment, pull a compromised machine for forensic copying, or check a new suite on Eisenhower Parkway before the move-in date. Monitoring runs 24/7 from Brooklyn, and so does emergency service. Our staffed help-desk hours are 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, seven days a week. The proposal states severe-incident escalation, authorized remediation and any other after-hours work.

What Montclair and Livingston show about local risk

Montclair's breach notice says attackers accessed township systems between about May 22 and June 1, 2023, and local reporting dates the attack on its IT department to June 6, the day of the primary election. The township's insurer, the Garden State Joint Insurance Fund, negotiated a $450,000 settlement. In April 2024 Montclair notified 17,835 people that names and driver's license numbers were involved. In November 2019 ransomware locked the servers of Livingston Public Schools, and the district opened late the following Monday while it restored access. Neither organization was careless by local standards. Both show that criminals looking for a payout will work through a township or school district in a matter of days, and a ten-person firm in Bloomfield or Caldwell has fewer people watching than either.

Law firms, insurers and advisers: email fraud and client files

Essex County employs more than twice the national share of workers in legal services and in financial investment, and insurance agencies and carriers are concentrated here too, according to federal QCEW data. Those firms move money and confidential files by email, which makes business email compromise the attack they most need to plan for: a lookalike domain or a hijacked mailbox asks for a changed wire. Our controls target that chain. Barracuda flags lookalike senders, DMARC enforcement stops spoofing of your own domain, Conditional Access blocks sign-ins from unmanaged devices, and a call-back rule for payment changes goes into the written procedures. For lawyers, New Jersey RPC 1.6(f) requires reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized access to information relating to a representation, and these controls are how a firm shows those efforts.

Air cargo and pharma distribution near Newark Liberty

Support activities for air transportation employ about eight times the national share of workers in Essex County, and drug wholesalers more than twice, because of Newark Liberty and the port. Those operations run on shared warehouse terminals, handheld scanners, label printers and carrier and customs portals where one set of credentials often serves a whole shift. We give each person their own sign-in where the portal allows it, keep shared devices on a separate network segment, store portal credentials in Keeper with access logs, and lock kiosks down in Intune so they run only the warehouse application. Pharmaceutical distributors also face their manufacturers' vendor security reviews, so we keep the evidence those reviews ask for, from patch status to backup tests, current in IT Glue.

The controls in place by the end of the first month

Week one: multifactor sign-in for every account, legacy authentication turned off, and a Rapid7 scan of the external perimeter so the first findings are on the table. Week two: ThreatDown agents on every computer and server, with the old antivirus removed cleanly. Week three: Barracuda in front of the mailboxes, a DMARC record moving toward enforcement, and Keeper rolled out to staff with a short training session. Week four: an immutable backup copy verified with a test restore you can watch, and a KnowBe4 baseline phishing test so later results have something to compare against. By day 30 you have a written list of what changed, what we found and the two or three decisions that need your budget, such as replacing a firewall that no longer gets updates.

Firewall, antivirus and maintenance for a five-person office

A five-person office needed the basics done properly rather than an enterprise stack. NetSys replaced the internet provider's router with a business-grade firewall configured with sensible rules, secure remote access and logging, deployed managed antivirus on every machine with updates and alerts handled centrally, and put patching, backup checks and health reviews on a schedule. The agreement covers what the office needs and nothing it does not, month to month. No outcome figures were measured for publication.

What cybersecurity costs in Essex County, NJ

Cybersecurity is priced per user per month when it runs as an ongoing service, and per project for an assessment or a remediation. What moves the number: how many devices and identities are in scope, how much incident remediation and recovery is needed beyond the monitoring and authorized MDR actions in scope, which compliance standard the evidence has to satisfy, and whether the Microsoft 365 tenant is already on Business Premium or the security tooling comes from us. The free external penetration test costs nothing and runs remotely before any of that. Our managed IT pricing page explains how the fee is built.

How the monthly fee is built

Who this fits, and who it does not

Best fit: businesses with enough people, money movement or regulated data that a breach would hurt, and no security team of their own: professional practices, healthcare groups, importers, financial firms, nonprofits and agencies holding client credentials. Companies with an internal IT person fit as a co-managed arrangement.

Common Questions

Cybersecurity in Essex County, NJ: FAQs

Do you provide on-site cybersecurity in Essex County, NJ?

Yes. Engineers come to offices in downtown Newark, the Ironbound, Montclair, West Orange, Livingston, Roseland, Millburn and the Caldwells to install firewalls, segment networks, harden Wi-Fi and handle the hands-on part of an incident. Detection and response never wait for a visit: analysts can isolate a machine remotely at any hour. Our one office is at 1 Prospect Park SW in Brooklyn, and the drive to most of the county takes under an hour.

How much do cybersecurity services cost in Essex County?

Security is priced per user per month after we assess your environment; there is no published rate. The main drivers are the number of people, computers and servers, how many sites and firewalls you have, the rules and questionnaires you answer to, such as HIPAA, Regulation S-P or an insurer's renewal form, and add-ons like vCISO time. One-time work, such as replacing a firewall or responding to an active incident, is quoted separately.

Which cybersecurity requirements apply to businesses in Essex County, NJ?

That depends on what you hold. Anyone keeping New Jersey residents' personal information falls under N.J.S.A. 56:8-163, which requires reporting a breach to the State Police before notifying customers. The New Jersey Data Privacy Act adds security duties for larger data controllers, nonprofits included. Lawyers have RPC 1.6(f), medical practices the HIPAA Security Rule, advisers SEC Regulation S-P and tax preparers the FTC Safeguards Rule. We map the list with your counsel. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can you stop a fake wire request from reaching our bookkeeper?

We can make it far harder to succeed. Barracuda catches most lookalike domains and spoofed senders, DMARC stops anyone sending as your own domain, and Conditional Access keeps a stolen password from opening a real mailbox to send a convincing request from inside. The last layer is procedural: a rule that any change to payment details is confirmed by phone, using a number already on file. We write that rule with you and test it with KnowBe4 simulations.

We were hit before. Can you help us recover and then prevent a repeat?

Yes. Incident response starts with containment: isolating affected machines, resetting credentials and preserving logs for your insurer and lawyer. Recovery comes from the cleanest backup, checked before anything goes back into use. Then we close the hole that let the attacker in, whether an exposed remote desktop port, an unpatched VPN or a reused password. NetSys has handled more than 30 ransomware incidents in three years, and every one was fully recovered.

Start with the free test

See what an attacker sees before they do.

The free assessment is a remote external penetration test, limited to the information available to NetSys and the external scope we agree with you. Internal reviews and ongoing security management are scoped separately.
