How cybersecurity is delivered in Irvine

Security is the part of IT that works best remotely, because the attacks arrive remotely too. Every Irvine endpoint runs ThreatDown EDR reporting to a security operations team that can isolate a machine from the network in seconds, wherever it is. Identity is enforced in Entra ID, email is filtered by Barracuda before it reaches Microsoft 365, and Rapid7 InsightVM scans for missing patches and exposed services. NetSys has no engineers in California and does not offer on-site security work there, so containment, evidence collection and recovery are all carried out over the network. Monthly reports and quarterly reviews happen over video, scheduled in Pacific time, with findings ranked by the risk they pose to your business. Monitoring runs 24/7 from Brooklyn, and so does emergency service. Our staffed help-desk hours are 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time (1 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific), seven days a week. The proposal states severe-incident escalation, authorized remediation and any other after-hours work.

Mortgage and lending firms after the loanDepot attack

In January 2024 a ransomware group got into loanDepot's systems, and the company later reported that personal information on about 16.9 million people was stolen, including Social Security numbers and financial account numbers; operations were disrupted for close to two weeks. LoanDepot's headquarters is on Irvine Center Drive, and the city is full of smaller lenders, brokers and servicers that hold the same kind of data with a fraction of the security staff. For them we focus on what stops ransomware crews: phishing-resistant multifactor sign-in, no exposed remote desktop, MDR with authority to isolate machines, privileged accounts separated from daily use, and immutable backups. Mortgage brokers also answer to the FTC Safeguards Rule, which requires a written security program and a qualified individual to oversee it.

Medical-device companies, labs and game studios

Edwards Lifesciences anchors a medical-technology cluster in Irvine, and startups in the University Research Park beside UC Irvine work on devices, diagnostics and biotech. Blizzard and other studios add game developers with valuable source code and large public followings. The threats differ by firm: intellectual property theft and supplier impersonation for device makers, account takeover and leaked builds for studios. The controls overlap more than they differ. We tag sensitive repositories and design files, restrict them to managed devices through Conditional Access, alert on mass downloads, and require hardware security keys for administrators. Engineering teams that use cloud developer platforms get those accounts tied to Entra ID single sign-on, so a departure removes access everywhere at once.

Health care lessons from Scripps and Southern California

Southern California hospitals have shown what a ransomware outage looks like. In May 2021 Scripps Health in San Diego County diverted emergency patients and ran on manual processes for almost four weeks, and the system later put its losses and extra costs at about $112.7 million. Irvine's medical practices, imaging centers and specialty groups run on the same kinds of cloud EHRs, patient portals and billing clearinghouses, at a smaller scale and with no security staff of their own. Under the HIPAA Security Rule they need a risk analysis, access controls, audit logging and contingency plans, and California's Confidentiality of Medical Information Act adds its own penalties for unauthorized disclosure. We provide the controls, a business associate agreement, and the documentation an auditor will ask for.

Testing your defenses before an attacker does

Security that is never tested is a guess. Each Irvine client gets Rapid7 InsightVM scans on a schedule, with findings ranked by what an attacker could actually reach, and a monthly patch report showing what was fixed. KnowBe4 sends simulated phishing to staff and tracks who clicks, followed by short training for those who do. Once a year we run an incident tabletop with your leadership: a fake ransomware note at 6 a.m. on a Monday, then a walk through who calls whom, what gets shut down and when counsel and the insurer are notified. New clients can also start with our free external penetration test, a remote test of your internet-facing systems within an agreed scope.

Firewall, antivirus and maintenance for a five-person office

A five-person office needed the basics done properly rather than an enterprise stack. NetSys replaced the internet provider's router with a business-grade firewall configured with sensible rules, secure remote access and logging, deployed managed antivirus on every machine with updates and alerts handled centrally, and put patching, backup checks and health reviews on a schedule. The agreement covers what the office needs and nothing it does not, month to month. No outcome figures were measured for publication.

What cybersecurity costs in Irvine

Cybersecurity is priced per user per month when it runs as an ongoing service, and per project for an assessment or a remediation. What moves the number: how many devices and identities are in scope, how much incident remediation and recovery is needed beyond the monitoring and authorized MDR actions in scope, which compliance standard the evidence has to satisfy, and whether the Microsoft 365 tenant is already on Business Premium or the security tooling comes from us. The free external penetration test costs nothing and runs remotely before any of that. Our managed IT pricing page explains how the fee is built.

How the monthly fee is built

Who this fits, and who it does not

Best fit: businesses with enough people, money movement or regulated data that a breach would hurt, and no security team of their own: professional practices, healthcare groups, importers, financial firms, nonprofits and agencies holding client credentials. Companies with an internal IT person fit as a co-managed arrangement.

Common Questions

Cybersecurity in Irvine: FAQs

How does cybersecurity work for Irvine organizations?

Remotely and continuously. ThreatDown's security operations team watches endpoints 24/7 and can isolate a compromised device immediately, while our engineers handle investigation and recovery. The help desk is staffed seven days a week from 1 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific, and an active incident goes straight to your dedicated engineer at any hour. Critical issues get a phone response within ten minutes. We report monthly on alerts, patching, phishing results and open risks, and meet with you quarterly to set priorities for the next three months.

What do cybersecurity services cost for an Irvine company?

Security is priced per user per month from an assessment, and inside a NetSys managed agreement the core stack is included: MDR, Defender, email protection, multifactor sign-in and Conditional Access, vulnerability scanning, training and backups. Standalone security services for a company with its own IT staff are quoted the same way. The price moves with the number of endpoints and servers, the cloud environments to monitor, compliance documentation such as HIPAA or the FTC Safeguards Rule, and how much incident response time you want reserved. Penetration tests beyond the free external test are quoted per scope.

Can you help with a customer security questionnaire or a cyber insurance application?

Yes, and those forms are where documentation pays off. Insurers and enterprise customers ask the same core questions: is multifactor sign-in enforced everywhere, is remote desktop exposed, are backups immutable and tested, is there EDR on every device, and is there an incident response plan. We keep the evidence for each answer in IT Glue and in the security tools' reports, so we can fill in the form accurately and flag any question where the honest answer is no, along with what it would take to change it.

What should we do in the first hour of a ransomware attack?

Call your dedicated engineer, then stop. Do not power machines off, pay anyone or wipe anything, because evidence and recovery options disappear. We isolate affected devices through ThreatDown, disable compromised accounts, block the attacker's access paths at the firewall and in Entra ID, and confirm the backups are clean. Then we bring in your cyber insurer and counsel, who usually choose a forensics firm, and restore systems in the order your recovery plan sets. NetSys has handled more than 30 ransomware incidents in three years, and every client recovered fully.

Which security rules apply to Irvine businesses?

It depends on the data you hold. Lenders and brokers follow the FTC Safeguards Rule and its 30-day breach report to the FTC for incidents involving 500 or more consumers. Medical practices follow the HIPAA Security Rule; the January 2025 proposal to update it is still only a proposal. Defense suppliers handle NIST SP 800-171 and DFARS 252.204-7012. Under Civil Code 1798.150, a consumer can sue when unencrypted personal information is exposed through a failure to maintain reasonable security, which makes those controls a financial issue as well as a legal one. This is general information, not legal advice.

Start with the free test

See what an attacker sees before they do.

The free assessment is a remote external penetration test, limited to the information available to NetSys and the external scope we agree with you. Internal reviews and ongoing security management are scoped separately.
