The short answer
Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is Microsoft's service for running Windows desktops and applications on virtual machines in Azure, delivered to users over the Remote Desktop client on any device. Azure Virtual Desktop services from NetSys include the fit assessment, host pool and image design, FSLogix profiles, identity integration, autoscaling so machines shut down when nobody is signed in, and ongoing patching, monitoring and cost review. We do not recommend AVD to everyone, and that is the first thing to know about how we sell it. A ten-person firm with modern cloud applications and managed laptops gains little from a virtual desktop except a second thing to log in to. AVD earns its place when the data must not leave the cloud, when an application cannot be modernized, or when the people who need access do not work on devices you control.

What is Azure Virtual Desktop used for in a small business?
Three cases come up most. Contractors or remote staff who need a company application without company data landing on their own computer. Legacy applications that only run on Windows Server and cannot move to a modern cloud service. And regulated workflows, in accounting, healthcare or financial services, where the auditor wants the data to stay in one controlled place. Outside those cases, a managed laptop or a Windows 365 Cloud PC is usually simpler and cheaper.
How is Azure Virtual Desktop licensed?
Employees who already hold Microsoft 365 Business Premium, an enterprise Microsoft 365 plan or a Windows Enterprise license are entitled to access Windows desktops on AVD. External users such as contractors can be licensed per user through Azure without buying them a Microsoft 365 seat. On top of the entitlement, the virtual machines and storage are billed by consumption, which is why autoscaling matters.
Azure Virtual Desktop or Windows 365: which should we choose?
Windows 365 gives each user a dedicated Cloud PC at a fixed monthly license, with almost nothing to operate, and it suits firms that want a simple per-person desktop. AVD is more flexible: many users can share one host, applications can be published without a desktop, and the cost tracks usage. It also takes more design and operation.
Will our line-of-business application run on Azure Virtual Desktop?
Most Windows applications do, including older ones that depend on a database server, because the server can sit in the same Azure network. Applications that need a physical dongle, specialized graphics or a scanner attached to the desk are the exceptions, and we test those in the pilot before committing. We also check the vendor's support statement for multi-session Windows, since some vendors support only one user per machine.
How do you keep Azure Virtual Desktop costs under control?
Autoscale is the main lever: hosts are shut down when no one is signed in and started as demand rises. Beyond that, we right-size the host virtual machines from measured demand, use the appropriate storage tier for profiles, and consider reserved capacity once the pattern is stable. Idle personal hosts are flagged and reclaimed.
Does NetSys manage Azure Virtual Desktop after it is built?
Yes. Ongoing management is part of the managed agreement: image updates, patching, monitoring, profile storage, user support through the help desk, and the monthly cost review. Changes such as adding a contractor group or publishing a new application are handled as routine work rather than as a new project. The agreement runs month to month.
