How cybersecurity is delivered in Middlesex County

Detection runs remotely and continuously: ThreatDown agents on every endpoint report to a security operations team, and a confirmed threat gets the device cut off from the network and the user's sessions revoked without anyone traveling. Because the county lies within our on-site radius, engineers also come in person when the work is physical or the stakes are high: installing and hardening a Fortinet or Meraki firewall, splitting a flat network into segments, pulling a compromised server off the rack, or walking an office through recovery the morning after an incident. From Park Slope the drive runs roughly three quarters of an hour to Woodbridge and an hour to New Brunswick or Piscataway. Incident work follows a written playbook agreed during onboarding, so nobody improvises who to call. Monitoring runs 24/7 from Brooklyn, and so does emergency service. Our staffed help-desk hours are 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, seven days a week. The proposal states severe-incident escalation, authorized remediation and any other after-hours work.

What the Spotswood wire fraud shows finance teams

In October 2025, criminals impersonated both the Borough of Spotswood and its board of education, and the borough's depository sent about $3.3 million in local school taxes to the impostor, according to the borough's own public release; Bloomberg Government reported that a school district employee's email account had been accessed. Private companies face the same play every week: an attacker reads a real mailbox, waits for an invoice, then sends new bank details from an address that looks right. The controls are unglamorous and they work. Multifactor sign-in on every mailbox, Conditional Access that blocks logins from unfamiliar countries and devices, Barracuda filtering for lookalike domains, alerts on new inbox forwarding rules, and a written callback rule: any change to payment instructions is confirmed by phone with a contact you already had.

Ransomware close to home: the 2019 hospital attack

Hackensack Meridian Health, headquartered in Edison, was hit by ransomware in December 2019. Its systems were down for about five days, roughly 100 elective surgeries were rescheduled, and leaders said cyber insurance funded the payment to the attackers. Smaller organizations rarely make the news, but the pattern is the same: an attacker gets in through a phished password or an unpatched remote-access device, spends days moving quietly, then encrypts servers and backups at once. Our answer has three parts. ThreatDown and Defender watch for the quiet phase, when a remote tool appears or an account starts touching servers it never used. Rapid7 scans find exposed services before attackers do. And backups sit on Datto or Veeam storage that the production network cannot delete, so recovery does not depend on paying anyone.

The order we put controls in place

Not every control is equally urgent, so the rollout follows the attacks that cost the most. Identity comes first: multifactor sign-in for every account, admin rights removed from daily accounts, and Keeper for shared passwords. Endpoint coverage is second, with ThreatDown and Defender for Business on every laptop and server and anything that cannot take an agent flagged for replacement or isolation. Email is third, where Barracuda and DMARC records cut the lookalike-domain and invoice fraud that hits accounts payable. The network is fourth: the firewall rebuilt, guest and device traffic segmented away from staff machines, and remote access moved behind multifactor. The human layer closes it out, with KnowBe4 phishing simulations and short training. In the more than 30 ransomware incidents we have handled over three years, every affected organization was fully recovered.

Security questions from customers, insurers and regulators

Middlesex County sits in the middle of New Jersey's pharmaceutical and health-care supply chain, and large customers in that chain commonly send suppliers long security questionnaires before a contract renews. Cyber insurers ask similar questions at every renewal: is multifactor authentication enforced, is there endpoint detection and response, are backups offline or immutable, is there an incident response plan. We keep the evidence ready in IT Glue, with screenshots, policies and test results, so the answers are true and quick to give. The New Jersey Data Privacy Act adds its own expectation for covered controllers: data security practices appropriate to the volume and nature of the personal data held. Our free external penetration test, run remotely against an agreed scope, is often the first item a firm adds to that file.

Firewall, antivirus and maintenance for a five-person office

A five-person office needed the basics done properly rather than an enterprise stack. NetSys replaced the internet provider's router with a business-grade firewall configured with sensible rules, secure remote access and logging, deployed managed antivirus on every machine with updates and alerts handled centrally, and put patching, backup checks and health reviews on a schedule. The agreement covers what the office needs and nothing it does not, month to month. No outcome figures were measured for publication.

What cybersecurity costs in Middlesex County, NJ

Cybersecurity is priced per user per month when it runs as an ongoing service, and per project for an assessment or a remediation. What moves the number: how many devices and identities are in scope, how much incident remediation and recovery is needed beyond the monitoring and authorized MDR actions in scope, which compliance standard the evidence has to satisfy, and whether the Microsoft 365 tenant is already on Business Premium or the security tooling comes from us. The free external penetration test costs nothing and runs remotely before any of that. Our managed IT pricing page explains how the fee is built.

How the monthly fee is built

Who this fits, and who it does not

Best fit: businesses with enough people, money movement or regulated data that a breach would hurt, and no security team of their own: professional practices, healthcare groups, importers, financial firms, nonprofits and agencies holding client credentials. Companies with an internal IT person fit as a co-managed arrangement.

Common Questions

Cybersecurity in Middlesex County, NJ: FAQs

Do you provide on-site cybersecurity in Middlesex County, NJ?

Yes. Our engineers travel from Park Slope to Middlesex County offices for firewall installs and hardening, network segmentation, wireless security work and hands-on incident response when a server or network has to be physically pulled apart. Day-to-day detection and response run remotely: ThreatDown monitoring is watched around the clock, and a threat can be contained by isolating the device and revoking the user's sessions before anyone arrives. Severe incidents go to your dedicated engineer.

How much do cybersecurity services cost in Middlesex County, NJ?

Security is priced per user per month as part of a managed agreement, or scoped as a project when you need one piece, such as a firewall replacement, a compliance gap analysis or incident recovery. The figure depends on how many users, devices and servers need coverage, which level of ThreatDown detection and response fits your risk, whether everyone needs email protection and training, and how much evidence your insurer or customers require. We do not publish prices. The external penetration test is the one service we provide at no charge.

Which cybersecurity requirements apply to businesses in Middlesex County, NJ?

Most businesses deal with New Jersey's breach notification statute, N.J.S.A. 56:8-163. It protects data like Social Security and driver's license numbers, financial account numbers with their access codes, and online logins made of a username or email plus password, and it calls for a report to the Division of State Police before affected customers are notified. If more than 1,000 people must be notified at once, the nationwide consumer reporting agencies must be told as well. The New Jersey Data Privacy Act adds security duties for larger data controllers, and medical practices follow the HIPAA Security Rule. This is general information, not legal advice.

What should we do in the first hour of a suspected breach?

Disconnect affected machines from the network but leave them powered on, so evidence in memory is not lost. Do not delete emails, wipe devices or pay anyone. Call your security provider: for NetSys clients, a suspected ransomware event or compromised mailbox goes straight to the dedicated engineer, who can isolate devices through ThreatDown, revoke sign-in sessions and start preserving logs. Then call your cyber insurer, because many policies require you to use their approved breach counsel. Notification decisions, including the State Police report, belong to you and your lawyer.

Do you offer managed security or a security operations center?

Yes, as a managed service rather than a team you have to hire. ThreatDown's managed detection and response is staffed around the clock and watches every enrolled endpoint, and our engineers act on its findings: isolating a laptop, stopping a malicious process, resetting credentials and following up with the user. Each month you get a report of what was detected, what was blocked and what still needs work, plus Rapid7 vulnerability results ranked by risk. Firms that also need a security leader can add vCISO work to the scope.
