Server and Windows deadlines Maryland offices are planning around
The most common consulting question in 2026 is what to do with the server in the closet. Windows Server 2016 extended support ends January 12, 2027, Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, and many Maryland offices still run a file server, a domain controller and a line-of-business database on 2016-era hardware. We price three options side by side: move the workloads to Azure, replace the hardware with a current Windows Server release, or retire the server by moving files to SharePoint and Azure Files and identity to Entra ID. The answer depends on the application vendor's support statement, the size of the data, internet capacity at the office and what the firm spends on hardware today. Projects driven by Maryland contracts and privacy law
Some consulting work starts with a letter from a customer or a lawyer. The Maryland Online Data Privacy Act took effect October 1, 2025, and firms that cross its thresholds need a data map: what personal data they collect, where it lives, who can reach it and how long it is kept, because the Act limits collection to what is reasonably necessary. Defense suppliers around Fort Meade and Aberdeen still need a system security plan and plan of action against NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2, even with CMMC Phase 2 suspended since July 13, 2026. Federal civilian work is moving too: a GSA guide issued in January 2026 makes NIST SP 800-171 Revision 3 the baseline for new GSA contracts that put controlled information on a contractor's systems. New offices, carriers and network designs
Office moves are a big share of consulting work, and the internet circuit is usually the long lead item. Fiber availability in Maryland changes quickly: Glo Fiber won grants from the Maryland Office of Statewide Broadband to reach more than 4,500 unserved locations in Frederick County and began that construction in September 2024, Verizon Fios covers most of Bethesda but only part of Frederick, and Comcast Business is close to universal in the suburbs. Many organizations keep us on after a project as a virtual CIO. Each quarter we review hardware age, license counts, renewals, security findings and the next year's budget, and we answer the questions a growing firm runs into: whether a new practice location can share one network with the first, what a cyber insurance application is really asking, or how to price IT for an acquisition. Continuity is part of every review. The March 2024 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge showed how quickly a physical event can reroute a business; the state told Kiewit in April 2026 it would not keep the firm for the main construction phase, and it now hopes to choose four replacement contractors by spring 2027. On-prem servers to Azure and OneDrive to SharePoint
Two migrations in one engagement. The client's servers lived in the office, so the business lived with the office's power, cooling and hardware age, and years of files sat in individual OneDrive accounts shared ad hoc. NetSys assessed and sized each workload and moved it into Azure with identity anchored in Entra ID, designed a SharePoint structure of sites by function and permissions by role before moving a single file, migrated the OneDrive estate into it, set backups for both platforms and took on day-to-day management. Will you work with our line-of-business software vendor?
Yes. Decisions about a CRM, an ERP, an EHR or a practice-management system are made with the vendor involved, because the vendor's support statement often decides what infrastructure is allowed. We handle the servers, identity, networking and integration, the vendor handles the application, and the project plan names who does each step. If the vendor needs remote access during a migration, we grant it for the window and remove it afterward, and the change is recorded in the project log.
Can you plan our Windows Server 2016 replacement before January 2027?
Yes, and it is worth starting now, because Windows Server 2016 extended support ends January 12, 2027. We inventory every server and the roles it holds, confirm what the application vendors support, and price moving to Azure, replacing hardware or retiring the server altogether. The schedule depends on hardware lead times and the vendor's availability, so dates go into the written plan rather than a guess. If a migration cannot finish before the deadline, we document compensating controls your insurer can review.
Can you assess an acquisition target's IT in Maryland?
Yes. IT due diligence for a Maryland acquisition is a remote review of the target's Microsoft 365 tenant, devices, servers, backups, security tools and vendor contracts, with read access granted for the review period. The report lists what the buyer inherits: unsupported systems, licensing shortfalls, open security findings, contracts that renew automatically and the cost to bring the environment up to the buyer's standard.
