How long does a file server to SharePoint migration take?
Most small-business migrations take a few weeks from inventory to cutover, driven more by cleanup and design than by data volume. What is the difference between SharePoint and OneDrive?
OneDrive is a person's own library: drafts, working files and anything not yet shared. SharePoint is the shared library for a team, department, client or project, with ownership that survives staff turnover. The common problem is shared work living in someone's OneDrive, which disappears from view when that person leaves. A migration is the moment to put team content in SharePoint and leave OneDrive for personal work.
Do we need SharePoint migration services if we already have Microsoft 365?
Having the license is the easy part. The tenant already includes SharePoint, and many firms have been using it by accident through Teams without structure, owners or sharing rules. The service is the design and the move: deciding what goes where, rebuilding permissions, migrating the file server, and connecting Teams so the result is one system instead of three.
Will our permissions carry over from the file server?
They can, but we recommend against copying them. Years of NTFS permissions usually contain exceptions nobody can explain, and SharePoint makes item-level exceptions harder to audit than a file server does. We map the old permissions, then rebuild them with security groups and site-level roles, reviewing each department's access with its owner before the wave moves. The result is a permission model you can explain to an auditor or a cyber-insurance reviewer.
Can staff keep using File Explorer after the migration?
Yes. The OneDrive sync client presents SharePoint libraries as folders in File Explorer on Windows and Finder on Mac, so the habit of opening a folder still works. We configure it centrally through Intune, set libraries to files-on-demand so laptops do not fill up, and test it against the applications that are fussy about file paths, such as accounting and CAD software, before cutover.
