Managed IT Services in Roanoke, VA
Roanoke's economy runs on health care, manufacturing, freight on Interstate 81 and a growing research corridor around Carilion and Virginia Tech. NetSys gives Roanoke Valley businesses a managed service provider that runs the help desk, security, backups, Microsoft 365 and the vendors behind them, remotely from Brooklyn, with no long-term contract.
The short answer
NetSys provides managed IT services to Roanoke, Virginia organizations, which can hand us their entire IT operation for one per-user monthly fee: the help desk, round-the-clock monitoring, scheduled patching, ThreatDown managed detection and response, the Microsoft 365 tenant and Intune devices, Barracuda mail filtering, backups we test by restoring them, the firewall and Wi-Fi, and your technology vendors. We work only remotely and in the cloud, and NetSys does not send engineers on site in the Roanoke Valley; laptops and network gear are configured before they arrive. Engineers take calls from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern daily, emergency service never closes, and the rate is set after an assessment.

How managed IT is delivered in Roanoke
The service runs over the network from our Brooklyn office, and NetSys does not send engineers on site in Roanoke, Salem, Vinton or Botetourt County. New laptops are registered in Windows Autopilot at the supplier, and on first sign-in they pull down their apps, printer connections and security policy without help. Firewalls come with the configuration already loaded; whoever handles facilities, or a cabling contractor, racks and plugs in the unit, and we take it from there. Cox was long Roanoke's main cable provider, and since Charter's 2026 acquisition that network is sold as Spectrum Business. Glo Fiber from Shentel is another option to check at your address, as is the Roanoke Valley Broadband Authority, a municipal open-access fiber network built for business, government and education customers in Roanoke, Salem and parts of Roanoke and Botetourt counties. Monitoring runs 24/7 from Brooklyn, and so does emergency service. Our staffed help-desk hours are 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, seven days a week. The proposal states severe-incident escalation, authorized remediation and any other after-hours work.
Carilion, the Innovation Corridor and Roanoke's practices
Carilion Clinic is the region's largest employer, with more than 13,000 people, and its flagship, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, is a 703-bed Level I trauma center. HCA's LewisGale Medical Center in Salem and the Salem VA Medical Center add to the medical economy. South of downtown, the Roanoke Innovation Corridor has grown around the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, whose 139,000-square-foot addition at 4 Riverside Circle opened in 2021, and RoVa Labs offers shared lab space on South Jefferson Street. For the independent practices, therapy groups and research startups around them, managed IT means an EHR and billing system that stays reachable, referral and imaging connections that work, lab computers patched only in approved windows, and the HIPAA Security Rule documentation an auditor will ask for.
Manufacturers, freight and data centers on Interstate 81
Interstate 81 is the valley's freight artery, and Roanoke's manufacturers, distributors and carriers depend on it. The city's own employer table lists UPS among its largest employers and Virginia Transformer Corporation among its manufacturers, and Norfolk Southern closed its Roanoke locomotive shops in May 2020 after 139 years. The 111-acre Wood Haven Technology Park, owned through the Western Virginia Regional Industrial Facility Authority at the I-81 and I-581 interchange, drew a data center prospect in September 2026. For a manufacturer or distributor, managed IT covers an ERP and production-scheduling system, label and shipping stations, EDI with customers and shop-floor PCs that run older software. We put production equipment on its own network segment behind the firewall, give machine vendors time-limited remote access and patch the floor between shifts.
Floods, Helene and mountain winters
The Roanoke River has shaped the city's risk planning since November 4, 1985, when storms from the remnants of Hurricane Juan stalled over the valley and ten people drowned; the flood became FEMA disaster DR-755. The Army Corps of Engineers finished a major flood reduction project in 2012, which has limited damage since, but the region keeps appearing in federal declarations: the June 2012 derecho, the remnants of Hurricane Michael in 2018, which dropped more than five inches of rain in a few hours, and Tropical Storm Helene in 2024, which named both Roanoke city and Roanoke County. Winter ice and snow add power outages. A Roanoke continuity plan therefore assumes the office loses power or access for days: servers and network gear on tested battery backup, nightly copies of every backup in cloud storage in another region, a Datto image that can run in the cloud and laptops that let staff work from home.
What Roanoke's schools and colleges learned about cyber risk
Two Roanoke Valley incidents are worth a business owner's attention. Roanoke College in Salem discovered a cyber incident on December 12, 2020, disconnected its network and delayed spring classes by almost three weeks, to February 8, 2021. In spring 2026 the national breach of Instructure's Canvas platform reached Roanoke City Public Schools, which cut off access, disconnected data sources and restored service on May 13 while it reconsidered the platform. The first is a recovery problem, answered by backups that restore quickly and a tested incident plan. The second is a vendor problem, answered by knowing which outside platforms hold your data and how to disconnect them. Managed IT covers both, and Virginia Code § 18.2-186.6 sets the notice duties if personal information is exposed. This is general information, not legal advice.
Managed IT Services in Roanoke: what NetSys delivers
Help desk and monitoring
- Unlimited help desk by phone, email and Teams, staffed by engineers rather than a ticket queue, with severe problems such as ransomware, systems down, no internet or email not working answered immediately by your dedicated engineer
- 24/7 monitoring of every server, workstation and firewall through NinjaOne RMM, with alerts an engineer acts on rather than forwards
Security, built in
- ThreatDown managed detection and response with EDR agents on every device, not just servers
- Microsoft Defender for Business, Entra ID Conditional Access and multifactor authentication across the Microsoft 365 tenant
Backups, devices and vendors
- Datto SIRIS or Veeam backups with immutable off-site copies, and live restores run on the schedule in the agreement with the result sent to you
- Intune and Windows Autopilot device management, so a new laptop ships sealed and configures itself at first sign-in
Complete managed IT, cybersecurity and help desk for a 20-seat organization
A 20-seat organization handed NetSys the whole of its IT. Devices, network, Microsoft 365 and vendors came under one agreement with 24/7 monitoring and a named account manager; endpoint protection, multifactor authentication, email protection and tested backups went onto all twenty seats; staff got a help desk with engineers on the other end; and every new hire now goes through a defined onboarding process with recurring phishing training. The write-up is limited to the scope delivered, with no outcome figures claimed.

Large manufacturing plant in Virginia

What managed IT costs in Roanoke
Managed IT is priced per user per month for a fully managed agreement, and the number moves with four things more than with headcount: how many servers you run, whether you need after-hours coverage beyond monitoring, how much compliance documentation you carry, and whether we are co-managing alongside an internal person or running everything. We quote from an assessment, not a phone call, and the agreement runs month to month. What belongs in the monthly fee versus what is billed separately is set out on our managed IT pricing page.
Who this fits, and who it does not
Best fit: 10 to 75 employees, one or two offices plus remote staff, already on Microsoft 365 or ready to move there, and either no internal IT or one person who is underwater.

Managed IT Services in Roanoke: FAQs
How does managed IT work for Roanoke organizations?
From Brooklyn, over the network, for every part of the service. Employees in Roanoke reach the help desk seven days a week between 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern, by phone, email or a Teams message, and overnight the monitoring tools and an emergency engineer cover the gap. Critical tickets get a phone response in under ten minutes and remote work in under thirty. NetSys sends no technicians to the Roanoke Valley; laptops arrive enrolled in Intune, network gear arrives configured, and a contractor you choose runs any new cable while our engineer completes the setup remotely.
What does managed IT cost for a Roanoke business?
Each user carries a monthly rate that we set after an assessment instead of reading it off a list. Around the Roanoke Valley the biggest variables are the number of sites, shop-floor or lab computers that need special handling, a server still running in the building, the HIPAA or customer documentation you must produce, project work outside business hours and the share of IT an employee already covers. Equipment, licensing and projects are priced on their own once scoped. There is no long-term contract; the agreement renews monthly.
What does a Roanoke managed IT plan include?
Think of it in four parts. For people: an engineer-staffed help desk, onboarding and offboarding, and KnowBe4 security training. For devices: patching through NinjaOne, ThreatDown detection and response with Defender, and Intune management of every laptop and phone. For data: administration of the Microsoft 365 tenant, inbound mail filtering, Keeper for shared credentials, and backups restored on a schedule. For the business: firewall and Wi-Fi management, calls to your software vendors and carriers, documentation in IT Glue and a quarterly review with your account manager.
What does onboarding look like for a Roanoke office?
It is the same remote process whether the office is downtown or in Daleville. In the first week we install monitoring, read the Microsoft 365, firewall and backup configuration and gather credentials and records from your current provider. The second week ends with a written plan and price for you to approve. The third and fourth weeks bring the security rollout, a timed test restore and the switch of the support number. Staff learn a new support number and address and start seeing a multifactor prompt, and a 20-person office is usually done within a month.
Can you support a Roanoke medical practice under HIPAA?
Yes. A practice that exchanges referrals and results with Carilion or LewisGale needs its own HIPAA Security Rule program: a risk analysis, access controls, audit logs, encryption, a contingency plan and business associate agreements with vendors, NetSys included. We run the technical side: unique logins with multifactor sign-in, encrypted laptops, EHR workstations on their own network segment, patching, backups with restore tests and an incident log. HHS published a proposed update to the Security Rule on January 6, 2025, but it is a proposal, not current law, so we work to the rule in force today.
