What does IT support for a private school actually cover?
The full stack. Help desk for staff and faculty, managed devices and classroom tech, Wi-Fi that holds up during testing season, email in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, backups, and security. Good providers also handle the school-specific pieces: content filtering, student information system uptime, and FERPA-aware data handling.
What cyber threats hit schools most?
Ransomware and phishing lead. The Center for Internet Security found that 82% of K-12 schools experienced a cyber incident between July 2023 and December 2024. Attackers target schools because they hold sensitive student and family data and often run lean IT teams. A staff member clicking a fake login is the usual way in.
What does FERPA require from our IT setup?
FERPA protects student education records, so your IT has to control who can reach them and keep them from leaking. In practice that means role-based access, encryption for data in transit and at rest, audit logs, vendor agreements that cover student data, and a plan to notify families if records are exposed. It's access control and data governance, not one product you buy.
How much does managed IT for a private school cost?
Most providers price per user or per device each month, so the number scales with staff and student headcount and how much classroom tech you run. Schools with 1:1 device programs, multiple buildings, or strict compliance needs sit higher. Ask for a fixed monthly figure that includes security, not a base rate that bills every incident on top.
How should we manage student and staff devices?
With mobile device management. MDM pushes settings, apps, and updates to Chromebooks, iPads, and laptops, and it lets you lock or wipe a lost device and keep student gear separate from staff systems. It's what turns a 1:1 program into something manageable instead of a pile of untracked hardware.
Do we have to filter internet content?
If your school takes E-rate discounts, yes. The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires filtering of obscene or harmful content as a condition of that funding. Beyond compliance, DNS and content filtering blocks malware and inappropriate sites for everyone on the network, which is worth doing whether or not you take the discount.
How do we keep the network safe with students on it?
Segment it. Put students, staff, guests, and building systems on separate network segments so a compromised student laptop can't reach payroll or the student information system. Add a locked-down guest network for visitors. Segmentation is one of the highest-value moves for a school network, and it costs mostly configuration time.
What should we do about staff phishing?
Train for it and filter for it. Staff clicking a fake login page is the most common way attackers get in, so pair email filtering and multi-factor authentication with regular security awareness training and simulated phishing. Teachers and administrators are busy and trusting, which is exactly what attackers count on.
