Managed IT Services for Retail and E-commerce
Retail IT has one unforgiving test: can the register take the card. Behind that moment sit the point-of-sale system, the payment terminal, the store's internet line, the inventory platform and, for brands selling online, a storefront that criminals probe for skimming code. PCI DSS wants the card data environment defined and defended, the busiest weeks of the year are the worst time for a change, and a multi-location chain inherits whatever the last installer left in each ceiling. NetSys provides IT support for retail businesses that keeps stores selling and keeps card data where it belongs.
The short answer
NetSys provides managed IT services for retail, from single stores to regional chains and online brands: registers and payment terminals on segmented networks with cellular failover, PCI DSS scope reduced and evidenced, e-commerce admin accounts and checkout scripts watched, and backups with timed restores. Peak weeks get change freezes. Agreements run month to month.
Sound familiar?
- A store that cannot take cards because the internet line dropped and nothing fails over
- Guest Wi-Fi, the point-of-sale system and the back office sharing one network

- Skimming code injected into the online checkout through a compromised plugin or admin account
- Twelve locations installed by twelve different contractors, none documented
- A store manager's tablet with the payroll app, the POS admin login and a two-year-old operating system

Payment and privacy rules for retailers
Card rules apply to every store and site that takes payments; credit and privacy rules depend on what you offer and where your customers live. We implement and evidence the controls, and your acquirer and counsel confirm what applies.
PCI DSS v4.0.1 in stores
Merchants validate against version 4.0.1, the only active version since January 2025, and the self-assessment questionnaire you file depends on how cards are taken. Validated point-to-point encryption keeps the in-store scope small, while registers that handle unencrypted card data pull the store network into scope.
PCI DSS e-commerce Requirements 6.4.3 and 11.6.1
Since March 31, 2025, payment pages must have every script inventoried, authorized and justified, and a mechanism must alert on unauthorized changes to the page. Merchants that outsource the whole checkout can file SAQ A, whose January 2025 revision removed those two requirements but asks the merchant to confirm its site is not susceptible to script attacks.
FTC Safeguards Rule for store credit (16 CFR §314.2(h)(2)(i))
A retailer that issues its own credit card directly to consumers is a financial institution under the rule, so it needs a Qualified Individual, multifactor authentication, encryption and notice to the FTC within 30 days when unencrypted information about 500 or more consumers is acquired without authorization.
NY SHIELD Act (GBL §899-aa)
Customer names paired with card numbers and security codes, or online store logins exposed with their passwords, are private information. A breach affecting New York customers requires notice within 30 days of discovery, and one that reaches more than 5,000 New Yorkers at once adds notice to the consumer reporting agencies.
This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm your obligations with counsel.
Retail platforms we support around
Stores and online brands usually pair a POS or e-commerce platform with accounting. We manage the networks, devices, staff logins and backups around them and bring in the vendor when a fault is inside their product.

IT support for a retail business with nine stores and one signed PCI questionnaire
The specific engagements behind this profile are under NDA, so it is written as a generalization rather than a named client. Our published, client-approved outcomes are in case studies.
A specialty retailer had grown to nine stores and an online shop. Each store's network had been installed by a different contractor, and in several the guest Wi-Fi shared a network with the registers. The annual PCI self-assessment questionnaire was signed by the controller, who had no way to verify the answers. The online storefront ran on a platform with a dozen plugins that nobody had updated, and its admin login was shared among the marketing team. A regional internet outage had recently left two stores unable to take cards for an afternoon.
- A store network standard designed once and applied to all nine locations, with registers, terminals, back office and guest Wi-Fi separated
- Cellular failover installed at every store and tested by pulling the primary line
- The cardholder data environment documented, point-to-point encryption confirmed with the processor and the correct questionnaire completed with evidence
- Storefront admin accounts made individual with multifactor authentication, plugins pruned and updated on a schedule, and monitoring added for unexpected script changes
- A peak-season change freeze written into the agreement, with an emergency exception process
The intended result is a questionnaire the controller signs with a folder of evidence behind it, stores that keep taking cards when the cable company has a bad day, and a record of exactly who changed the checkout page and when.

Retail & E-commerce IT FAQs
Do you provide IT support for retail businesses with a single store?
Yes. A single store has the same exposure as a chain: card data, a point-of-sale system that cannot go down and an online presence that can be abused. The agreement covers help desk, monitoring, network, security, PCI evidence and backups under one fee. When the second store opens, it is built from the standard the first one established.
What does PCI DSS require of a small retailer?
It depends on how cards are accepted. A store using point-to-point encrypted terminals with no card data touching its own systems completes a short self-assessment questionnaire. A retailer whose systems handle card data, or whose e-commerce checkout is hosted on its own site, faces a longer questionnaire and, in some cases, quarterly external scans. We define the card data environment, reduce its scope where possible and complete the correct questionnaire with evidence so the acquirer's request is not a scramble.
How do we keep taking cards when the internet goes down?
Cellular failover. A store firewall with a cellular connection takes over automatically when the primary line fails, and the registers never notice. We test it by disconnecting the primary line after installation and then on a schedule. For chains, the failover is part of the standard store build rather than an afterthought at the one location that got burned.
How do we protect our online store from checkout skimming?
Skimming attacks inject code into the checkout through compromised plugins, themes or admin accounts. Defenses are individual admin logins with multifactor authentication, plugins reduced to what is needed and updated on a schedule, changes tested on staging before production and monitoring that alerts when a script on the checkout page changes. Where the platform hosts the checkout, we confirm what the platform covers and what remains your responsibility.
Can AI automation help an e-commerce business?
Yes, in specific places. Order status and return requests can be answered from your order data without a person retyping it, product descriptions can be drafted from specifications for review, and supplier documents can be extracted into the inventory system. We build these on tools you already license and keep customer data inside your systems. The guide linked below walks through the fits and the misfits.
Do you require a long-term contract?
No. Retail agreements are month to month, and stores can be added or removed as the footprint changes. Seasonal staffing changes are reflected in the fee rather than locked into a term, and the store build documentation stays with the retailer.
What do managed IT services for retail include?
They cover stores, headquarters and the online shop under one agreement: help desk and 24/7 monitoring for managed clients, point-of-sale and terminal networks with cellular failover, PCI DSS evidence, device management for store tablets, email defense against gift card and supplier fraud, and backups with timed restores. Change freezes protect peak weeks.
How much do managed IT services for a retail chain cost?
The agreement is priced per user per month, and we do not publish rates. For retailers the drivers are store count, registers and devices per store, staff turnover, e-commerce platform scope, PCI DSS evidence work and on-site visits. New store builds are quoted as projects, and stores can be added or removed month to month.
How do you handle staff turnover at the register?
With named logins and a same-day exit. Every associate gets an individual POS and back-office account with a role-based permission set, managers get their own elevated login, and offboarding after the last shift removes access to the register, email and store apps. Shared codes taped under the counter go away.
Can you manage store tablets and handheld scanners?
Yes. Store tablets, handhelds and manager phones are enrolled in device management with the apps they need, encryption and remote wipe, and they update outside trading hours. A lost or broken device is replaced from a standard configuration, and staff sign in with their own accounts rather than a shared store login.
What should a retailer do before the holiday season?
Freeze nonessential changes, then test what peak volume will stress. Confirm cellular failover by pulling the primary line, check that backups restore, patch registers and store PCs before the freeze starts, review who has admin access to the online store, and brief staff on gift card and fake-supplier scams. Write the emergency change process down.
