IT Services and Cybersecurity in Cambridge, MA
Cambridge has about 1.3 jobs for every resident, and many of them sit in companies too young or too small for an IT department: biotech spin-outs in Kendall Square, software teams near Central Square, law and consulting offices around Harvard Square. NetSys is the IT company that runs their technology remotely, from the help desk to security and compliance.
The short answer
NetSys is an IT services and cybersecurity company for Cambridge, Massachusetts organizations. We run the help desk, laptops and phones, Microsoft 365, ThreatDown managed detection and response, firewalls and Wi-Fi, the separation between lab and office networks, backups with tested restores, vendor management and IT consulting. All of it is delivered remotely and through the cloud from our Brooklyn office, and NetSys does not send engineers on site in Cambridge. Managed IT is priced per user per month after an assessment, and agreements run month to month.
- One office, in Brooklyn, NY; Cambridge is supported remotely, with no NetSys engineers working on site in Massachusetts
- Laptops are enrolled in Intune and Windows Autopilot before they ship, and firewalls arrive configured for your facilities lead or contractor to connect
- Monitoring and emergency service run 24/7; the help desk is staffed seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time
- Month-to-month agreements and 98% client retention
What an IT company handles for a Cambridge organization
Most Cambridge organizations that call us have between 8 and 120 people and nobody whose full-time job is IT. A founder or an operations lead has been buying laptops, approving Microsoft 365 licenses and calling the building's contractor when the Wi-Fi drops. NetSys takes that whole list: an engineer-staffed help desk, Intune-managed laptops and phones, the Microsoft 365 tenant, ThreatDown on every device, Barracuda email protection, Keeper for shared passwords, backups that are restored on a schedule, the firewall and access points, and the calls to carriers and software vendors. IT Glue records every account, license and circuit in documentation your company owns. A dedicated account manager, with a real cell number, reviews budget and upcoming hires each quarter. Firms with their own IT lead can hand us a defined share instead, such as security monitoring or a migration, and keep the rest.
How remote support works for Cambridge offices and labs
Support runs from our office at 1 Prospect Park SW in Park Slope, Brooklyn, through the agent on each computer, the Intune and Microsoft 365 admin centers and the firewall's cloud dashboard. We do not send engineers on site in Cambridge, and we say so before an agreement is signed. That suits the city's building stock: lab buildings that require badges and escorts for outside contractors, coworking floors where the operator controls the network closet, and converted mills near Alewife with landlord-managed risers. A new laptop ships to the employee and sets itself up at first sign-in. Network gear arrives configured, and your facilities lead or the building's low-voltage contractor installs it while our engineer confirms it on the console. Written commitments give a critical issue a ten-minute phone response and a thirty-minute remote response, and Cambridge keeps the same Eastern hours we do.
Industries that cluster in Cambridge, and the systems they run
The City of Cambridge counted 151,304 jobs in the second quarter of 2023, almost all of them private. Harvard and MIT lead a higher-education sector of more than 21,500 employees, and nine of the ten largest biotech companies, among them Takeda, Moderna, Novartis, Biogen and Sanofi, keep a headquarters or major office in the city. Akamai, HubSpot, CarGurus and Google appear among its largest technology employers. Around them work the businesses we are built for: startups running an electronic lab notebook and instrument software, software teams on cloud development tools, patent and IP law firms on a document management system and docketing software, consulting and research firms on a project accounting system, and university-affiliated nonprofits on a donor and grants database. We support the identity, devices, network and backups under each application and work with its vendor when the application is the problem.
Broadband, buildings and flood risk in Cambridge
Internet choice in Cambridge is narrower than its reputation suggests. Reporting on the city's March 2023 municipal broadband feasibility study put Comcast's share of the local market at about 80 percent, and the study priced a citywide fiber network at $124 million to $161 million in 2022 dollars. For a business that means checking Comcast Business, Verizon Fios and any fiber already in the building at your address, then adding cellular failover so one carrier is not a single point of failure. Water is the other planning issue. The city's Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment names the Alewife and Fresh Pond area as the part of Cambridge most exposed to flooding as sea levels rise, and Middlesex County was included in federal declarations for the January 2015 blizzard and the March 13 to 14, 2018 nor'easter. We keep data in the cloud, backups out of state and laptops ready for work from home.
Vendor risk: what the CodeRED breach showed Cambridge
In November 2025 the City of Cambridge warned residents that OnSolve's CodeRED emergency alert platform, which the city used, had been hit in a nationwide attack that exposed subscribers' phone numbers, email addresses and passwords. The city's systems were not breached; a vendor's were. That is the pattern most small organizations face. A Cambridge startup may depend on 40 software services, and any of them can leak a password your staff reuse elsewhere. We reduce the damage in three ways. Keeper gives every employee unique passwords and shows reuse, single sign-on through Entra ID means one strong login with multifactor authentication instead of dozens of weak ones, and Conditional Access blocks sign-ins from devices we do not manage. 201 CMR 17.03 also expects you to pick service providers that can protect personal information and to require it by contract, so we keep a vendor inventory you can use for that review.
Massachusetts law and research rules for Cambridge organizations
Any business holding a Massachusetts resident's name with a Social Security, driver's license or financial account number falls under 201 CMR 17.00, which requires a written information security program and lists computer controls in section 17.04: secure authentication, access limited by job, encryption on laptops and across public networks, monitoring, current patches and firewalls, malware protection and training. Chapter 93H, section 3 requires notice to the Attorney General, the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and affected residents after a breach, as soon as practicable and without unreasonable delay. Cambridge adds a rule of its own for biotech: under the city's Recombinant DNA ordinance, labs using rDNA need a permit from the Commissioner of Public Health, approved by the Cambridge Biosafety Committee, so biosafety records and training files deserve the same backups as research data. Practices add HIPAA. This is general information, not legal advice.

Cambridge, MA FAQs
Who provides IT services in Cambridge, MA?
NetSys provides managed IT, help desk support, cybersecurity and IT consulting to Cambridge organizations, delivered remotely from its Brooklyn office. One agreement can cover the help desk, devices, Microsoft 365, security, backups, the network and your vendors, or a defined part of that list beside an in-house IT person. Firms that want a technician who can be in the building every week should look at a provider with a Boston-area office, and we will say so if that is a better fit for you.
How does IT support work for Cambridge organizations?
Staff call, email or message the help desk in Teams, and an engineer connects to the device remotely, usually fixing the issue in that conversation. Monitoring and emergency service run 24/7; the help desk is staffed seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time. Ransomware, a dead circuit or email that stops working goes straight to your dedicated engineer. NetSys has no engineers working on site in Cambridge, so hardware is shipped pre-configured and your staff or contractor connects it while we guide them.
How is IT support priced for a Cambridge company?
Managed IT and IT support are priced per user per month, quoted after an assessment, and we do not publish a rate card. The main variables in Cambridge are lab networks and instrument PCs, how many devices each person uses, any servers still kept in the office, compliance work such as HIPAA, 201 CMR 17.00 or NIST SP 800-171, and whether someone on staff keeps part of IT. Projects such as an office move or a tenant migration are scoped and quoted separately.
Can you set up IT for a startup leaving LabCentral or a coworking space?
Yes, and it is one of the most common projects we see in Kendall Square. Leaving shared space means taking over the network, printers and guest Wi-Fi the operator used to run, and often moving staff off university or personal accounts onto a proper company Microsoft 365 tenant. We plan the new suite's circuit and firewall, enroll every laptop in Intune, move files into SharePoint with sensible permissions and set up backups before move day, then run the environment under a managed agreement.
Do you support lab instruments and research data?
We support the infrastructure around them. Instrument PCs go on their own network segment with tightly limited access, are patched on the schedule the instrument vendor validates, and are isolated if they still run Windows 10 or another unsupported system. Research shares are backed up separately and restore-tested. The instrument software and electronic lab notebook stay with their vendors for application support, and we work with those vendors when a problem sits between their product and the network.
Can you work alongside university IT or a part-time IT person?
Yes. Spin-outs often keep a university affiliation for a while, with some staff on university accounts and some on the company's, and a part-time IT person or an operations lead who holds it together. We map what belongs to whom, move company data and identities into your own tenant, and agree in writing which tasks stay with your person or the university and which move to us. Monitoring, security and after-hours response are the usual first handover.
Do you also support offices in Boston, Somerville or Watertown?
Yes, on the same remote terms. A company with a lab in Watertown, an office in Kendall Square and a sales team in Boston runs under one agreement, with one Microsoft 365 tenant, shared security policies and site-to-site connections between the networks. Each location's circuits and equipment are documented separately in IT Glue. Our Boston page covers that city in more detail, and the Massachusetts managed IT page describes how we support the rest of the state.
What does the free external penetration test include?
It is a remote test of what your organization exposes to the internet, such as the firewall, VPN, email security records, public web services and remote access portals, run within a scope we agree with you in writing beforehand. An engineer walks you through the findings and what to fix first. It does not include internal network testing or remediation, which are scoped separately. It is the only free service NetSys offers, and it is a practical way to judge our work before signing anything.
