Cybersecurity Services in Knoxville, TN
Ransomware shut down the City of Knoxville's network in 2020, and two years later intruders spent days inside East Tennessee Children's Hospital. NetSys protects Knoxville businesses, practices and Oak Ridge contractors with managed detection and response, hardened sign-in, filtered email, staff training and recoverable backups, all run remotely from Brooklyn on the same Eastern clock.
The short answer
Knoxville organizations get cybersecurity from NetSys as one managed program: endpoint detection and response from ThreatDown with analysts on watch 24/7, Defender for Business, Conditional Access rules in Entra ID that require multifactor sign-in, Barracuda in front of email, KnowBe4 training, Rapid7 scans, Keeper vaults for shared passwords and immutable backups. Defense suppliers around Oak Ridge also get NIST SP 800-171 documentation. Everything runs remotely from Brooklyn, with no NetSys engineers sent to Knoxville, and each user is billed monthly with no long-term contract.

How cybersecurity is delivered to Knoxville organizations
We run every control from Brooklyn through software already on your devices. The ThreatDown sensor reports to analysts who work day and night, the NinjaOne agent handles patches, Conditional Access in Entra ID blocks sign-ins from unmanaged devices and unexpected countries, and Barracuda inspects mail before staff see it. If a laptop in a Cedar Bluff office starts encrypting files, it is isolated from the network through the ThreatDown console, the user's sessions are revoked, and your dedicated engineer takes the case. NetSys does not send anyone to Knoxville or Oak Ridge; when a firewall must be swapped, a preconfigured Fortinet or Meraki unit arrives by courier and a member of your staff connects it with our engineer on the phone. Monthly reports list what was blocked, what was patched and what is still open. Monitoring runs 24/7 from Brooklyn, and so does emergency service. Our staffed help-desk hours are 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, seven days a week. The proposal states severe-incident escalation, authorized remediation and any other after-hours work.
Knoxville's own incident record
In the early hours of June 11, 2020, ransomware shut down the City of Knoxville's computer network, with a demand of about $393,000 in bitcoin. The Knoxville Police Department stopped taking some reports by computer, court sessions were rescheduled, and within weeks the attackers began posting city employee files on the dark web; outside analysts attributed the attack to the DoppelPaymer group, and the city said it did not expect to pay. In March 2022, East Tennessee Children's Hospital spotted unusual activity on its network on March 13, and its investigation found unauthorized access from March 11 to 14 and that some documents may have been copied. Both cases show what a few days inside a network allows: files are copied before anything is encrypted, so good backups alone do not end the problem.
Oak Ridge contractors and NIST SP 800-171
Oak Ridge National Laboratory reports more than 7,000 employees, and the Y-12 National Security Complex sits alongside it, so engineering firms, machine shops and IT contractors from Hardin Valley to Oak Ridge handle government work. Defense suppliers that hold controlled unclassified information must follow DFARS 252.204-7012, implement the 110 requirements of NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2, and keep a current score and affirmation in SPRS. On July 13, 2026, the Department of War suspended CMMC Phase 2, the third-party Level 2 certification that would have become a condition of award on November 10, 2026, and a reform task force is reviewing the program; self-assessments and the DFARS clause remain in force. Department of Energy contracts carry their own security terms. We write the system security plan and plan of action, enforce the controls in Microsoft 365 and Intune, and keep the evidence an assessor would request.
Controls that answer the Knoxville risks
Each control maps to how these attacks start. Stolen passwords stop working once a second factor guards email, remote access and each vendor login, and legacy protocols that skip it are switched off. Phishing loses most of its force behind Barracuda, a DMARC policy that reduces spoofing of your domain, and monthly KnowBe4 simulations. Intruders moving between machines run into ThreatDown, segmentation on the firewall, and daily accounts that no longer have local administrator rights. Data theft becomes visible through alerts on unusual downloads and on mailbox rules that forward mail outside. And when encryption does happen, Datto or Veeam backups with immutable copies let us restore servers and files without negotiating. Across more than 30 ransomware incidents in the last three years, NetSys has fully recovered every one.
The first 30 days of a Knoxville security program
The first week is inventory and exposure. Agents go on every device, accounts and admin roles are listed, and we run the free external penetration test against your public-facing systems inside a scope you sign. The second week closes the biggest gaps: ThreatDown takes over from legacy antivirus, multifactor sign-in is enforced group by group, and shared credentials move into Keeper. The third week hardens mail and starts training, with Barracuda live, DMARC published for monitoring and a baseline phishing test sent. The fourth week tests recovery with a real restore and delivers a written security program mapped to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework; for a defense supplier, it also delivers a draft system security plan scored against NIST SP 800-171. By day 30, leadership has a list of open risks with owners and dates.
Cybersecurity in Knoxville: what NetSys delivers
Detection and response
- ThreatDown managed detection and response with EDR agents on every workstation, laptop and server, monitored 24/7
- Microsoft Defender for Business and Rapid7 InsightIDR telemetry from identities, email and endpoints, with a person acting on alerts
Identity and email
- Entra ID Conditional Access and multifactor authentication across Microsoft 365, with legacy authentication switched off
- Privileged access and privileged identity management so admin rights are granted just in time and removed afterwards
Exposure and recovery
- Rapid7 InsightVM vulnerability scanning on a schedule, with findings fixed rather than filed
- Cisco Meraki or Fortinet firewall management, segmentation and DNS filtering on office and remote devices
Law office: layered security on Microsoft 365 with cloud-to-cloud backup
A 25-attorney firm needed client confidences protected better than a closet server could manage. Alongside a Microsoft 365 migration, NetSys layered anti-phishing and email threat protection, DNS filtering, multifactor authentication on every account and endpoint protection across attorney devices in the office and remote, and established independent cloud-to-cloud backup of the entire tenant because the recycle bin is not a backup strategy for privileged material. The firm reported 82% fewer IT support incidents per month within two quarters.

What cybersecurity costs in Knoxville
Cybersecurity is priced per user per month when it runs as an ongoing service, and per project for an assessment or a remediation. What moves the number: how many devices and identities are in scope, how much incident remediation and recovery is needed beyond the monitoring and authorized MDR actions in scope, which compliance standard the evidence has to satisfy, and whether the Microsoft 365 tenant is already on Business Premium or the security tooling comes from us. The free external penetration test costs nothing and runs remotely before any of that. Our managed IT pricing page explains how the fee is built.
Who this fits, and who it does not
Best fit: businesses with enough people, money movement or regulated data that a breach would hurt, and no security team of their own: professional practices, healthcare groups, importers, financial firms, nonprofits and agencies holding client credentials. Companies with an internal IT person fit as a co-managed arrangement.

Cybersecurity in Knoxville: FAQs
How does cybersecurity work for Knoxville organizations?
As a managed service run over the internet from Brooklyn. Software on each computer reports to ThreatDown analysts and our NinjaOne console, sign-in rules live in Entra ID, and email passes through Barracuda first. Alerts are watched at every hour, and a confirmed threat lands with your dedicated engineer, who can quarantine a device, lock an account or block a sender without anyone traveling. Everyday questions go to the help desk, staffed from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern, seven days a week. Physical changes use equipment we ship preconfigured, since NetSys does not send engineers to Knoxville.
How much do cybersecurity services cost in Knoxville?
We price security per user per month, inside a managed IT agreement or on its own, after an assessment. The main drivers are the number of people, computers and servers, whether detection must also watch cloud workloads, how many email domains need protection, how much data is backed up, and the documentation required: a defense supplier needing a NIST SP 800-171 system security plan and SPRS score takes more work to support than a five-person office. Incident response outside the agreement and penetration testing beyond the free external test carry separate quotes, and there is no long-term contract.
Which cybersecurity requirements apply to businesses in Knoxville, TN?
Every business holding Tennesseans' personal information falls under the state's breach statute, which sets a 45-day outer limit for notifying affected people after discovery. Large data holders also answer to the Tennessee Information Protection Act. Medical practices and hospitals, including the network around Covenant Health and the University of Tennessee Medical Center, follow the HIPAA Security Rule. Defense suppliers carry DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171, and insurance agencies are subject to Tennessee's Insurance Data Security Law. Tax preparers answer to IRS Publication 4557 and the FTC Safeguards Rule. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can you help a Knoxville company answer a cyber insurance questionnaire?
Yes, and the answers should be true before they are written. Insurers now ask whether multifactor authentication covers email, remote access and administrator accounts, whether backups are immutable and tested, whether endpoints have detection and response, how often staff are trained, and whether end-of-life systems remain. We check each item against your environment, fix the gaps, and give you the evidence, such as screenshots of Conditional Access policies and restore test logs. An inaccurate answer on an application can complicate a claim later, so we flag anything we cannot confirm.
Do you work with Knoxville businesses that already have IT support?
Yes. A security-only agreement fits a company with an IT person or provider it trusts. We run detection and response, email filtering, sign-in hardening, phishing training, vulnerability scans and backup checks; your team holds on to the help desk and the day-to-day work. A short document sets out who patches which systems, who is called first in an incident, and who approves changes. For Oak Ridge contractors, we can also take on just the NIST SP 800-171 documentation and evidence, working alongside the people who already run the network.
See what an attacker sees before they do.
The free assessment is a remote external penetration test, limited to the information available to NetSys and the external scope we agree with you. Internal reviews and ongoing security management are scoped separately.
