Cybersecurity Services in Memphis, TN

Ransomware froze Collierville's town servers in 2019, Germantown brought in the FBI after an attack in 2024, and a vendor breach exposed Memphis-Shelby County Schools records that December. NetSys defends Memphis businesses against the same kinds of attack with managed detection and response, hardened email and sign-in, staff training and backups an attacker cannot delete, all run remotely.

The short answer

NetSys provides cybersecurity services and managed security for Memphis organizations: ThreatDown managed detection and response with Microsoft Defender for Business on every computer, Barracuda email protection, multifactor sign-in enforced through Entra ID Conditional Access, KnowBe4 phishing training, Rapid7 vulnerability scans, Keeper password management and immutable backups. Alerts are watched 24/7, and an engineer can isolate an infected machine remotely at any hour. The service is remote; NetSys has no staff in Tennessee, and its engineers do not work on site. Security carries a per-user monthly fee set after an assessment, and the agreement runs month to month.

How cybersecurity is delivered in Memphis

Each protection is installed and watched from Brooklyn. The ThreatDown sensor and Defender run on every laptop and server, Barracuda filters mail before it reaches Microsoft 365, and Conditional Access policies decide which devices, locations and sign-in methods are allowed at all. If ThreatDown sees encryption behavior or a hands-on-keyboard intruder, that machine is cut off from the network while the rest of the office keeps working, and the case goes to your dedicated engineer. Evidence is preserved for your insurer and attorney. Rapid7 scans find missing patches and exposed services, and NinjaOne closes them on a schedule you approve. A replacement firewall arrives configured for your staff to plug in, because NetSys does not send engineers to Memphis. Monitoring runs 24/7 from Brooklyn, and so does emergency service. Our staffed help-desk hours are 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time (3 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central), seven days a week. The proposal states severe-incident escalation, authorized remediation and any other after-hours work.

Recent attacks in Shelby County and what they exploited

The local record is specific. On July 18, 2019, Collierville employees could not log on: Ryuk ransomware had reached most of the town's Microsoft servers and frozen police reports and utility bills, and the town, which did not negotiate with the attackers, later put its costs above $100,000. In early February 2024, Germantown reported a malicious cybersecurity incident that its defenses contained to a limited number of internal servers, and the FBI joined the criminal investigation. In December 2024, attackers entered PowerSchool, the student-records vendor used by Memphis-Shelby County Schools, through a customer support portal that did not require multifactor sign-in at the time; the district sued the vendor in May 2025. Each case had one path in: servers reachable from a single foothold, or a vendor login protected by a password alone. Those are the paths a managed security program closes first.

Vendor portals, invoice fraud and the inbox

The PowerSchool breach shows how often the weak point is someone else's system. A Memphis business typically signs in to a payroll provider, a benefits portal, a bank, freight or customer portals and a dozen cloud apps, and many of those connect to Microsoft 365 with permissions nobody reviews. We inventory the third-party apps with access to your tenant and remove the ones you no longer use, require multifactor sign-in on every portal that offers it, and store credentials in Keeper instead of spreadsheets. Business email compromise gets its own layer: Barracuda flags impersonation and look-alike domains, DMARC, SPF and DKIM reduce spoofing of your own domain, and an alert fires when someone creates a rule that forwards or hides mail. Finance teams also adopt one habit that defeats the usual invoice-redirection scheme: confirm any change to a vendor's bank details by calling a number already on file.

Tennessee breach, privacy and liability rules

Tennessee's breach law, Tenn. Code 47-18-2107, requires a business to notify affected Tennessee residents immediately, and no later than 45 days after discovering a breach of their unencrypted personal information, unless law enforcement needs more time; a company holding data for someone else must tell the owner within the same window. In 2024 the legislature passed Public Chapter 991, under which a private company is not liable in a class action over a cybersecurity event unless the event was caused by willful and wanton misconduct or gross negligence. It does not reach individual lawsuits, regulators or the cost of recovery, so it is not a reason to spend less. The Tennessee Information Protection Act adds privacy duties for large data holders, and medical practices still answer to the HIPAA Security Rule. This is general information, not legal advice.

The first 30 days of a Memphis security program

Days one to seven measure where you stand. We run the free external penetration test against your firewall, VPN and public sign-in pages within a scope agreed in writing, start Rapid7 scans and audit Microsoft 365 for legacy sign-in protocols, admin accounts without multifactor and mailbox forwarding to outside addresses. In week two ThreatDown replaces whatever antivirus is there, server by server. Week three applies Conditional Access: block legacy authentication, require a managed device for administrators and stop sign-ins from countries where you have no staff. Keeper replaces shared password files at the same time. Week four sends a baseline KnowBe4 phishing test, restores a server from immutable backup to prove it can be done, and delivers a written incident response plan that names who calls the insurer and counsel, and when Tennessee's 45-day notice clock starts.

Published case study

Law office: layered security on Microsoft 365 with cloud-to-cloud backup

A 25-attorney firm needed client confidences protected better than a closet server could manage. Alongside a Microsoft 365 migration, NetSys layered anti-phishing and email threat protection, DNS filtering, multifactor authentication on every account and endpoint protection across attorney devices in the office and remote, and established independent cloud-to-cloud backup of the entire tenant because the recycle bin is not a backup strategy for privileged material. The firm reported 82% fewer IT support incidents per month within two quarters.

What cybersecurity costs in Memphis

Cybersecurity is priced per user per month when it runs as an ongoing service, and per project for an assessment or a remediation. What moves the number: how many devices and identities are in scope, how much incident remediation and recovery is needed beyond the monitoring and authorized MDR actions in scope, which compliance standard the evidence has to satisfy, and whether the Microsoft 365 tenant is already on Business Premium or the security tooling comes from us. The free external penetration test costs nothing and runs remotely before any of that. Our managed IT pricing page explains how the fee is built.

How the monthly fee is built

Who this fits, and who it does not

Best fit: businesses with enough people, money movement or regulated data that a breach would hurt, and no security team of their own: professional practices, healthcare groups, importers, financial firms, nonprofits and agencies holding client credentials. Companies with an internal IT person fit as a co-managed arrangement.

Common Questions

Cybersecurity in Memphis: FAQs

How does cybersecurity work for Memphis organizations?

It runs as a managed service from our Brooklyn office. Agents on each device report to ThreatDown and NinjaOne, sign-in rules live in Entra ID and every message passes through Barracuda. A confirmed threat goes straight to your dedicated engineer, who can isolate a computer, disable an account or block a sender remotely, overnight as well as during business hours. NetSys engineers do not come on site in Memphis. Each month you receive a report on blocked attacks, patch levels and the risks that remain open, and your account manager reviews it with you every quarter.

How much do cybersecurity services cost in Memphis?

Security is priced per user per month, either within a managed IT agreement or as a security-only service, and the figure comes from an assessment, so we do not publish a rate. It moves with the number of users, computers and servers, whether detection must also cover cloud workloads, how many mail domains we protect, backup volume and the documentation you need, such as a HIPAA risk analysis, a CTPAT cybersecurity policy or answers to a customer questionnaire. Incident response outside the agreement and penetration testing beyond the free external test are quoted separately.

Do you offer cybersecurity consulting or managed security services on their own?

Yes. Some Memphis organizations already have an internal IT person or another provider and want IT security handled separately. We can run managed detection and response, email protection, training and vulnerability management alongside them, with responsibilities written down so nothing falls between the two teams. We also take consulting engagements: a security assessment, a written information security program, preparation for a cyber insurance application or a virtual CISO who meets with leadership each quarter. Both kinds of work are remote and month to month.

Does Tennessee's 2024 class-action law mean we can spend less on security?

No. Public Chapter 991 raises the bar for class actions over a cybersecurity event to willful and wanton misconduct or gross negligence, but it leaves individual lawsuits, contract claims from customers, regulator actions and the breach-notice duty in place, and it does nothing about downtime, ransom demands or the cost of rebuilding systems. Insurers also ask about multifactor sign-in, backups and endpoint detection before they renew a policy. Documented controls remain the best defense, both against attacks and against an argument that a company was grossly negligent. Your attorney should advise on the specifics.

What does the free external penetration test check?

It is a remote test of what an attacker on the internet can see and reach, within a scope we agree with you in writing. We look at your public IP addresses and domains for open ports, exposed remote desktop or VPN portals, outdated firewall firmware, weak or default logins on internet-facing services, and email DNS records such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC. You receive a written report ranking each finding by risk, with a fix for each one. It does not test inside your network; internal testing and remediation are quoted separately.

See what an attacker sees before they do.

The free assessment is a remote external penetration test, limited to the information available to NetSys and the external scope we agree with you. Internal reviews and ongoing security management are scoped separately.
