IT Consulting Albany: Assessments and Projects for Capital Region Organizations
NetSys provides IT consulting to Albany and Capital Region organizations: written assessments, roadmaps with costs, Windows Server retirements and Azure migrations, network designs, security programs for state contracts and a virtual CIO who stays for the quarterly review. Projects are run remotely by engineers in Brooklyn, with milestones and acceptance checks agreed before work starts.
The short answer
NetSys provides IT consulting in Albany: assessments, technology roadmaps with costs, Microsoft 365 and Azure migrations, Windows Server 2016 retirements ahead of its January 12, 2027 end of extended support, network and office designs, security and compliance programs, and virtual CIO reviews. Each project has agreed milestones, change windows, acceptance checks and a handover. The work is remote: discovery, design reviews and cutovers run from our Brooklyn office, and NetSys does not send engineers to the Capital Region. Projects are quoted after scoping, and a project does not include the help desk unless you add a managed agreement.

How IT consulting is delivered in Albany
A consulting engagement for an Albany organization runs on video calls, shared documents and our own tooling. Discovery starts with a lightweight agent that inventories every computer and server, read-only access to Microsoft 365 and the firewall, and interviews with the people who use the systems. Design reviews happen on screen with the drawings in front of everyone. Cutovers are scheduled in change windows stated in Eastern time, often on a weekend, with a rollback plan written beforehand. NetSys does not send engineers on site in Albany, so physical steps are planned from the start: a new firewall or switch arrives configured and labeled, your cabling contractor or facilities staff installs it, and an engineer confirms the network from the other end. Carriers to check include Spectrum Business, Verizon and Albany-based FirstLight. Assessment, design and integration work is coordinated from Brooklyn, with meetings and change windows stated in Eastern time. The project has agreed milestones, acceptance checks and a handover. Ongoing monitoring and help desk require a separately defined managed scope.
Windows Server 2016 and the January 2027 deadline
Microsoft ends extended support for Windows Server 2016 on January 12, 2027. An office that refreshed its servers around 2017 may still have a 2016 file server, domain controller or application host in the closet, and after that date it gets no security fixes, which is hard to explain on a cyber insurance renewal or a state contract questionnaire. The consulting question is where each workload should go: Microsoft 365 and SharePoint for files, Entra ID for sign-in, Azure for an application that must stay on a server, or a new on-premises machine when a vendor insists. We inventory the roles on each server, test the line-of-business application with its vendor, move one workload at a time and keep the old server read-only until the last acceptance check passes.
What the airport authority's 2019 ransomware says about IT providers
On Christmas Day 2019 the Albany County Airport Authority found its administrative servers and its backup servers encrypted. The ransomware had arrived through its own IT provider, a Schenectady-based firm whose management network had been breached. The authority paid a ransom reported as under six figures, with its insurer covering most of it, recovered its files and later ended the provider's contract. Travelers' data and flight operations were not affected. The lesson for any Capital Region business is to assess whoever holds your keys. A NetSys assessment examines how your provider reaches your systems: whether its remote tools require multifactor sign-in, whether the backups can be deleted with the same credentials that run production, whether its accounts are named or shared, and whether you could revoke all of that access in an hour.
Security clauses in state agency contracts
Policy NYS-P03-002 from the state Office of Information Technology Services, last updated on February 2, 2025, reaches past agency staff to any consultant, vendor or contractor using an IT resource that a state entity or ITS administers, and that includes systems an outside firm hosts for the state. Its vulnerability management section says agreements with outside parties must contain provisions for scanning, penetration testing and fixing what those tests find. A consulting engagement turns those clauses into a plan before the contract starts: we map each requirement to a control you already run or one you need, write the missing policies with your leadership, schedule the scanning and testing, and assemble the evidence an agency reviewer will ask to see. Whether that evidence meets the contract is a call for the agency and your lawyer.
Office moves and network designs in Capital Region buildings
Office parks along Wolf Road and in Latham usually offer a choice of carriers. Downtown Albany's older buildings share risers, and Troy's converted mills run on whatever fiber reached them, so a network design starts with the circuit each site actually has. For a move or a new office we work from floor plans, photos and a short video tour, then deliver a design package: the circuit order with lead times, the firewall and switch models, access point placement, a cable schedule your contractor can bid on and the cutover plan. Equipment is configured in Brooklyn and shipped labeled. On move weekend, your contractor connects it while an engineer brings each service up remotely and the checklist is signed off line by line before Monday.

On-prem servers to Azure and OneDrive to SharePoint
Two migrations in one engagement. The client's servers lived in the office, so the business lived with the office's power, cooling and hardware age, and years of files sat in individual OneDrive accounts shared ad hoc. NetSys assessed and sized each workload and moved it into Azure with identity anchored in Entra ID, designed a SharePoint structure of sites by function and permissions by role before moving a single file, migrated the OneDrive estate into it, set backups for both platforms and took on day-to-day management. The write-up is limited to the scope delivered, with no outcome figures claimed.

What IT consulting costs in Albany
Consulting is priced by the project or by the review rather than by the hour: an assessment has a fixed price based on the size of the environment, a migration is quoted from the workload inventory, and virtual CIO advisory is a monthly figure that scales with how many reviews and decisions a year you need. What moves the number is the number of systems and sites, the compliance standard in play and whether we are also managing the environment afterwards. Every quote is written from discovery, and the terms run month to month.
Who this fits, and who it does not
Best fit: 10 to 150 employees, a decision on the table that involves cloud, an office move, an acquisition, a compliance program or a system nobody trusts, and leadership that wants options with numbers rather than a sales deck.

IT Consulting in Albany: FAQs
How does IT consulting work for Albany organizations?
Remotely, in stages with written deliverables. Discovery interviews and data collection come first, then a findings report, then a design or roadmap you approve before any change is made. Change windows are stated in Eastern time and agreed with you. NetSys does not send engineers on site in the Capital Region, so any hardware ships configured and your staff or contractor installs it with an engineer on the call. Consulting is separate from support: if you want the help desk and monitoring as well, that is a managed agreement with its own scope.
What can IT consulting cover in Albany, and how is it priced?
The service spans written assessments, costed roadmaps, Microsoft 365 and Azure migrations, server retirements, network and office designs, security and compliance programs, and virtual CIO reviews. Assessments and projects are quoted after scoping, from the size of the environment, the number of sites and systems, and the standard in play, such as an agency contract or a cyber insurance questionnaire. Virtual CIO advice is a monthly figure on month-to-month terms. We do not publish a price list, and every quote names the deliverables and the acceptance checks.
What happens after the roadmap is delivered?
Three paths are open. Your own team runs the projects, with us available for reviews; we run the projects under separate quotes; or we take on the environment under a managed agreement and work the roadmap into it. Whichever you choose, the quarterly virtual CIO review keeps the roadmap, the budget and the risk register current, so a decision made in March still makes sense in September. The roadmap is yours either way, written so another provider could follow it.
How is IT consulting different from managed IT services?
Managed IT runs your environment every day: help desk, monitoring, security and backups. Consulting answers a question or delivers a project: whether to move a server to Azure, how to meet an agency's scanning clause, what a new office in Latham needs, what an acquisition target's IT will cost to fix. Many organizations use both, with consulting decisions feeding the managed roadmap. Our page on IT consulting and our Albany managed IT page describe each in more detail.
Can you assess the IT provider we have now?
Yes, and many assessments start there. With your permission we review the provider's remote access tools, the accounts it uses in your Microsoft 365 tenant and on your servers, how backups are protected, what documentation exists and who owns it, and what the contract says about leaving. You receive a plain report of the risks and the fixes, which you can hand to your current provider. If you decide to switch, the same report becomes the transition plan.
Bring the decision you are stuck on.
A cloud move, a merger, a compliance deadline, a system nobody trusts. Tell us what you run and what has to change, and an engineer comes back with an assessment, options with real numbers and the order to do them in.
