IT Support for Architecture and Engineering Firms in Manhattan

Manhattan design studios run on heavy workstations, models measured in gigabytes and drawing sets that leave the office every week for consultants, clients and the Department of Buildings. NetSys gives architecture and engineering firms the help desk, storage, security and project-ready laptops that work needs, with engineers from our Brooklyn office on site when the job calls for hands.

What changes for an architecture or engineering firm in Manhattan

Design work in Manhattan follows the city's own filing and inspection calendar. Applications go to the Department of Buildings through DOB NOW: Build, where only a registered architect or professional engineer can submit a job filing and everyone involved signs in with an NYC.ID account, so who holds those logins matters as much as who has the file server password. Engineers and architects working as Qualified Exterior Wall Inspectors are in the middle of FISP Cycle 10, whose three sub-cycles run from February 2025 to February 2029, and every facade inspection produces a photo-heavy report that travels from a tablet on a scaffold to a filing. Local Law 97 adds annual emissions reports certified by a registered design professional, pulling utility data and consultant spreadsheets into the project folder. Then there is the office: a loft floor downtown or a Midtown South suite with one carrier in the riser, a plotter that needs its own network path, and a landlord who controls when cable can be pulled. We plan the IT around all of it: fast storage for the active model, cloud sync for the rest, and accounts closed the day a project member leaves.

On-site and remote support for Manhattan studios

Our only office is at 1 Prospect Park SW in Park Slope, and a subway ride puts an engineer in a Midtown South or Financial District studio in well under an hour. Engineers come in person for the jobs that need hands: building and replacing GPU workstations, connecting large-format plotters and scanners, pulling cable and mounting access points during the building's approved work window, and preparing a new floor before move-in day. Before any of that, we send the certificate of insurance your managing agent asks for and book the freight elevator. Everything else runs remotely. NinjaOne patches and watches every workstation and laptop, the help desk answers designers directly, and severe problems such as a ransomware alert or a dead file server go straight to the firm's dedicated engineer. An account manager with a real cell number keeps track of open items between visits.

Workstations, project files and the model everyone opens at once

Most studios run a design authoring suite, a PDF markup tool, rendering software and a project-management or time-billing system, with Microsoft 365 for mail and Teams. We do not choose those applications for you; we make the machines and storage behind them hold up. That means workstations specified for the software's graphics and memory requirements, kept on driver versions the vendor certifies, and enrolled in Intune so a designer's laptop is managed at a job site as well as at a desk. For storage, central models that several people open at once usually stay on fast local storage or on a hosted desktop close to the data, while archives and reference files move to SharePoint or Azure Files with permissions set per project. Datto or Veeam backups capture project folders through the day, and restores are tested on a real model, not a text file.

Floods, power and a cut riser: continuity for a design studio

New York County has been named in four major federal disaster declarations since 2011: Irene, Sandy, the COVID-19 pandemic and the remnants of Ida. Sandy's surge flooded the cable vault under Verizon's 140 West Street building in Lower Manhattan, and the July 13, 2019 relay failure at a Con Edison substation cut power to about 73,000 West Side customers for most of an evening. A studio facing a submission deadline cannot wait out any of those. So project data is kept off site and recoverable, the firewall gets a cellular or second-carrier path where the building allows it, and designers can open a current model from home through a managed laptop or a hosted desktop. The continuity plan names who tells clients and agencies about a delayed submission, and a full project restore is tested with a principal watching.

The rules that apply

Rules that reach a Manhattan design firm's IT

GSA Order PBS 3490.3 on sensitive building information

Drawings and specifications for GSA-controlled federal buildings can carry Controlled Unclassified Information. The order, as changed in March 2021, says only building information that qualifies and is marked as CUI must be controlled, that the marking follows the information when it leaves GSA, and that every holder must align its protections with the order and the CUI program. For a design firm that usually means a separate project space with named access, encrypted transfer and an audit trail, which we set up in SharePoint.

Port Authority Information Security Handbook

Consultants on Port Authority of New York and New Jersey work follow its Information Security Handbook, revised April 2, 2018. Firms exposed to protected information designate a Security Information Manager, non-Authority staff need a successful background check before they see Confidential Privileged Information, and that category may be exchanged electronically only through an approved secure collaboration solution with per-person access control and encrypted transfer. Prime consultants must flow the same terms down to subconsultants.

NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC for defense design work

Design and engineering contracts with the Department of War that involve CUI carry DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2, with a current SPRS score and affirmation. On July 13, 2026 the department suspended CMMC Phase 2, the third-party Level 2 certification that was due to start November 10, 2026, and a reform task force is reviewing the program. Level 1 and Level 2 self-assessments still apply, so the controls have to exist and be documented.

The New York SHIELD Act

General Business Law section 899-bb requires reasonable safeguards for New York residents' private information, which for a studio means employee and payroll records and any personal data that ends up in project files. Section 899-aa now requires notice to affected residents within 30 days of discovering a breach, plus notice to the Attorney General, the Department of State and the State Police. Common Questions

Architecture and Engineering Firms in Manhattan: FAQs

Who provides IT support for architecture firms in Manhattan?

NetSys does, from one office in Park Slope, Brooklyn, a short subway ride from Manhattan's design districts. We have worked in IT since 1998, our engineers hold degrees in electrical engineering, electronics engineering and computer science and are certified in Cisco and Microsoft, and agreements run month to month. For architecture and engineering firms we run the help desk, workstations, storage and backup, Microsoft 365 and security, and we work with your software vendors on licensing and support problems. We do not publish client names.

Do you provide on-site IT support for architecture firms in Manhattan?

Yes. Manhattan is well inside our on-site area, and engineers from Brooklyn come to the studio for workstation builds, plotter and scanner installs, Wi-Fi and cabling, conference room screens and floor moves. We send the certificate of insurance the building requires and book freight and after-hours windows through the managing agent. Most everyday requests, from a stalled sync to a license error, are fixed remotely first, so an engineer usually travels only when the problem is physical.

What does IT support cost for an architecture firm in Manhattan?

We price managed IT per user per month after an assessment and do not publish a rate card. For a design firm the figure moves with the number of high-end workstations, how much project data is stored and backed up, whether models live on a local server or a hosted desktop, and how much compliance work government projects add. Hardware, cabling and a new office fit-out are quoted separately after scoping. Agreements run month to month, so there is no long-term contract to sign.

How do you help Manhattan architecture and engineering firms handle client and government CUI?

We separate it. Marked drawings for GSA, Port Authority or defense projects go into a project space with named members, multifactor sign-in from managed devices only, external sharing switched off and audit logging on. Transfers to consultants use encrypted links that expire, and we keep a record of who had access and when files were returned or destroyed at closeout. Where a contract requires it, we document the controls against NIST SP 800-171, so the firm can answer the client's security questions from evidence.

Do you support CAD and BIM software for design firms in Manhattan?

Yes, at the infrastructure level. We install and update the design, rendering and markup applications your firm licenses, keep workstation drivers on versions the software vendor certifies, manage network license servers and work the vendor's support desk when a crash looks like a software defect. We also size storage and connections for central models that several designers open at once. Choices about which design applications to buy, and how they are configured inside the program, stay with your team and the vendor.

Can designers work on large models from home or a job site?

Usually, with the right setup. Options include a managed laptop with enough graphics power and a sync client, a hosted desktop in Azure that sits beside the project data so only the screen travels, or a VPN back to a local file server for smaller files. We choose based on file sizes and how many people edit the same model at once, and we test from an ordinary home connection in Brooklyn, Queens or New Jersey before rolling it out to the studio.
