The short answer

NetSys provides IT support and cybersecurity for accounting firms in Los Angeles, from two-partner tax practices in the San Fernando Valley to business management firms in Century City. The service is remote and cloud-based only: we run the help desk, ThreatDown managed detection and response, Microsoft 365 with Conditional Access, Barracuda email filtering, Datto or Veeam backups and the evidence behind your written information security program. We do not send engineers to Los Angeles; laptops ship pre-configured through Intune and Windows Autopilot. Fees are per user per month, set after an assessment, on a month-to-month agreement.

What changes for an accounting firm in Los Angeles

Accounting in Los Angeles comes in a few distinct shapes. There are tax and audit practices along Ventura Boulevard in Encino, Sherman Oaks and Woodland Hills; regional and mid-size firms in Downtown and Century City towers; and the entertainment business management firms that run bill pay, royalty tracking and tour accounting for actors, musicians and writers. That last group handles a client's checking account as well as the return, which makes a hijacked mailbox or a forged wire request far more expensive than a stolen spreadsheet. The calendar bends around local events too. After the January 2025 Palisades and Eaton fires, the IRS and the Franchise Tax Board postponed deadlines for every Los Angeles County taxpayer to October 15, 2025, which stretched the filing calendar into October for every client who used the relief, while some staff and clients were displaced. The lesson for IT was simple: workpapers, the tax software and the client portal have to work from any laptop, on any connection, with the office closed. That is the standard we build to.

How support works when your IT team is 2,400 miles away

Everything runs remotely. NinjaOne patches workstations overnight Pacific time, ThreatDown watches every endpoint, and IT Glue holds the firm's network notes, vendor contacts and procedures so any engineer can pick up a ticket cold. Monitoring and emergency service run 24/7; the help desk is staffed seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, which is 1 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Los Angeles. A preparer still working at 9 p.m. in March reaches emergency service if the tax system or email goes down. NetSys does not send engineers on site in Los Angeles. A new hire's laptop arrives enrolled in Intune and Windows Autopilot, and your office manager or your own cabling contractor plugs in printers, scanners and the firewall we configure before it ships. Critical issues get a phone response within ten minutes and a remote connection within thirty.

Tax software, client portals and the identity layer

A small firm can run a surprising stack: professional tax software with its own update cycle, a practice-management and time system, a document management system, a client portal for organizers and e-signatures, a payroll service and bank portals for every client whose bills the firm pays. None of that gets replaced; our part is the hardware, network, identity and backups those tools depend on. Each user signs in through Entra ID with Conditional Access and phishing-resistant multifactor sign-in, so a stolen password alone opens nothing. Shared logins for bank and payroll portals move into Keeper, with access recorded per person. Tax software updates are tested on one machine before the rest of the office gets them in January. When a vendor is the problem, we open the ticket, send the logs and stay with it, so a partner is not on hold during extension week.

Wire fraud, fire season and getting back to work

The incidents that hurt accounting firms tend to be ordinary. A preparer's mailbox is phished, the attacker reads a few weeks of correspondence, and a client receives revised bank instructions that look like they came from the firm. We counter with Barracuda impersonation filtering, alerts on new mailbox forwarding rules, KnowBe4 training timed before filing season and a written call-back rule for any payment change. Recovery planning assumes the building can be unreachable for weeks, as parts of the Westside and Altadena were in January 2025. Datto SIRIS or Veeam keeps immutable copies outside California, Microsoft 365 is backed up separately, and we restore a sample of tax data each quarter to prove it works. NetSys has handled more than 30 ransomware incidents in three years, all fully recovered, and clients that already had a disaster recovery plan were working again within 24 hours.

The rules that apply

Rules that shape IT for Los Angeles accounting firms

FTC Safeguards Rule (16 CFR Part 314)

Tax preparation firms are financial institutions under the rule. It requires a written information security program with a Qualified Individual, a written risk assessment, multifactor authentication, encryption of customer information at rest and in transit, and written reports to the firm's leadership at least annually. Since May 2024, an event involving unencrypted information of 500 or more consumers must be reported to the FTC no later than 30 days after discovery. Firms holding data on fewer than 5,000 consumers are exempt from some provisions, not all of them.

IRS Publications 4557 and 5708, and the PTIN statement

Publication 4557 sets out the safeguards the IRS expects of tax professionals, and Publication 5708 is a template for the written plan itself. Form W-12, used to obtain or renew a PTIN, includes a statement acknowledging that paid preparers must create and maintain a written information security plan. We keep the plan's technical sections current: the asset list, access controls, backup test results and incident steps.

California Board of Accountancy confidentiality and Civil Code 1798.82

Business and Professions Code 5063.3 and the Board's regulations bar licensees from disclosing confidential client information without permission, with narrow exceptions such as an enforceable subpoena. California's breach statute, amended by SB 446 effective January 1, 2026, requires notice to affected residents within 30 calendar days of discovering a breach, and a sample notice to the Attorney General within 15 calendar days when more than 500 residents are notified. HIPAA when the firm serves medical clients

A firm that handles protected health information for a healthcare client can be a HIPAA business associate. In August 2025, HHS's Office for Civil Rights announced a $175,000 settlement with BST & Co. CPAs, a New York accounting firm, after a ransomware attack, citing the lack of an accurate and thorough risk analysis. We perform that risk analysis for firms in the same position.

Common Questions

Accounting Firms in Los Angeles: FAQs

What does IT support cost for a CPA firm in Los Angeles?

NetSys prices managed IT per user per month, and the figure comes from an assessment of your firm rather than a rate card. The things that move it most are the number of servers or hosted tax applications, whether you want help maintaining the written security program and annual report, how many bank and payroll portals staff use on clients' behalf, and whether an internal IT person stays on. Projects such as a Microsoft 365 migration or a document management cleanup are quoted separately after scoping. Agreements run month to month.

How does IT support work for accounting firms in Los Angeles?

Support is remote and cloud-based. Your staff call, email or open a ticket with engineers in Brooklyn, who connect to the machine, fix it and record what changed. The staffed desk covers 1 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific every day, and monitoring plus emergency service cover the remaining hours. We do not travel to Los Angeles, so hardware ships ready to use through Windows Autopilot, and your staff or a local cabling contractor handle anything physical. Severe problems, such as ransomware or email down during filing week, go straight to your dedicated engineer.

How do you help a Los Angeles firm meet the FTC Safeguards Rule?

We start with the written risk assessment, then map each element of 16 CFR 314.4 to a control we can demonstrate: multifactor sign-in on every account, encryption on laptops and in Microsoft 365, logging, vendor oversight and a tested incident response plan. Your Qualified Individual stays someone at the firm, or a virtual CISO if you prefer, and we supply the technical evidence for the annual written report. The same material covers the PTIN plan acknowledgment and most cyber insurance applications.

Do you support our tax and practice-management software?

Yes, in the way an IT provider should. We install and update the professional tax software, the practice-management and document systems and the client portal connector, make sure they run well on your hardware, and manage the network, backups and access around them. Problems inside an application go to its vendor; we open those tickets and work them with the vendor's support team so your staff do not have to. We do not resell or customize the accounting applications themselves.

Can staff work safely from home during tax season?

Yes. Each laptop is managed through Intune, encrypted with BitLocker, protected by ThreatDown and checked by Conditional Access before it can reach client files. Files live in SharePoint or the document management system rather than on the laptop. If a laptop is lost on the way back from a client meeting, we lock and wipe it remotely and ship a replacement that rebuilds itself through Autopilot. Home networks are treated as untrusted, so nothing depends on how a preparer's router is set up.

Do entertainment business management firms need stronger controls?

Usually, because they carry more payment risk. A business manager often holds online banking access or signing authority for clients, pays household staff and vendors, and moves tour and royalty money. For those firms we add separate administrator accounts for banking, hardware security keys for anyone who can release a payment, alerts on sign-ins from new countries and a call-back rule the whole office follows. Client files often include contracts and medical bills, so access is limited to each client's team rather than open firm-wide.
