Logistics IT Support in Chicago, IL

Freight moves through Chicago by rail, truck and air, and the 3PLs, brokers and warehouse operators in between run on Wi-Fi, handheld scanners, EDI links and carrier portals. NetSys keeps that technology running remotely from Brooklyn: networks designed for racked warehouses, monitored connections to trading partners and security against the fraud that targets freight.

The short answer

NetSys provides IT support and cybersecurity for logistics companies in Chicago and its freight corridors, including third-party logistics providers, freight brokers, forwarders and warehouse operators. Everything is remote and cloud-based: warehouse Wi-Fi and firewall management through Cisco Meraki or Fortinet, handheld and printer support, EDI and integration monitoring, Microsoft 365, ThreatDown detection and response and backups. No NetSys engineer works at your Chicago buildings: we program each device here, and your crew or a cabling contractor hangs and wires it. Logistics companies pay per user per month at a rate set after our assessment, on month-to-month terms.

Chicago is where the country's freight changes hands

Rail freight converges on Chicago. Industry figures cited by the CREATE program put about a quarter of the nation's rail traffic through the region, and all six U.S. Class I railroads operate here. Southwest of the city, the CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Elwood and Joliet surrounds BNSF Logistics Park Chicago and Union Pacific's Global IV terminal, with warehouses stretching along I-80 and I-55. Closer in, distribution buildings line I-294 and I-88, Bedford Park and Franklin Park, and the cargo area at O'Hare, which handled about 1.77 million metric tons of cargo in the first ten months of 2025. Freight brokers fill offices in the Loop, River North and the western suburbs. The technology is consistent across all of them: a warehouse or transportation management system, EDI with shippers and carriers, load boards, carrier onboarding portals, handheld scanners and label printers. When any link stops, trucks wait at the door and detention charges start.

Support for warehouses and freight offices from Brooklyn

We manage every location remotely. Wi-Fi access points, switches and firewalls ship configured, your electrician or cabling contractor mounts them, and we bring them online and tune them from the Meraki or Fortinet dashboard. Every handheld and rugged tablet is managed through Intune; take a spare out of the box, power it on, and it loads the scanning app and joins the right wireless network by itself. NinjaOne patches office PCs, ThreatDown watches endpoints, and IT Glue holds each building's network map and printer list. Monitoring and emergency service run 24/7; the help desk is staffed seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, which is 3 a.m. Central and early enough for a 4 a.m. first shift. Overnight problems reach emergency service. We do not send engineers to warehouses or terminals, and the proposal says so in writing.

Warehouse Wi-Fi, scanners and the EDI connection

Warehouses are hard on wireless. Steel racking, stretch-wrapped pallets and high ceilings absorb and reflect signal, and a scanner that drops off the network while moving between aisles loses the transaction. We plan coverage from your floor plan and rack layout, use the access points' own radio data to find weak areas, and adjust channels and power remotely, with your contractor moving or adding hardware where needed. Scanners, cameras, office PCs and guest drivers each get their own network segment. We watch EDI and API traffic with shippers and carriers, so a rejected or missing transmission produces an alert while there is still time to resend it. Each building also gets a backup internet path, usually cellular. For the main circuit, AT&T Business Fiber, Zayo and Comcast Business are worth pricing at your address.

Freight fraud, ransomware and a Chicago winter

Fraud in freight now arrives through identity. Criminals take over a broker's load board or email account, pose as a legitimate carrier with stolen registration details, or send a carrier a new remit-to address. FMCSA has stood up a registration fraud team and added identity verification to its registration system, but your own accounts are your responsibility: multifactor sign-in on load boards and carrier portals, Keeper for shared logins, Barracuda impersonation filtering, and a phone confirmation, to a known number, before anyone changes where a payment goes. Ransomware is handled with immutable backups outside Illinois and regular restores of warehouse and transportation data. Weather is the other constant. On January 30, 2019 O'Hare reached 23 degrees below zero, and more than 1,600 flights were canceled at Chicago airports during that cold snap; firewalls and switches in unheated dock offices need equipment rated for it.

The rules that apply

Security programs and rules for Chicago logistics firms

CTPAT Minimum Security Criteria: cybersecurity

CBP's Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism added cybersecurity to its minimum security criteria in 2019. Criterion 4.1 requires members to have comprehensive written cybersecurity policies and procedures to protect their IT systems, and CBP encourages basing them on recognized frameworks such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Importers, highway carriers, consolidators and other member types each have their own criteria booklet. We write and maintain the IT policies, map them to the criteria that apply to you and keep the evidence a CTPAT validation will ask for.

Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (740 ILCS 14)

Finger-scan timeclocks and biometric gate or door systems are common in Chicago warehouses. BIPA requires informed written consent before collection, a retention and destruction policy available to the public and limits on disclosure, with liquidated damages of $1,000 per negligent and $5,000 per intentional or reckless violation. Since the August 2024 amendment, scanning one worker repeatedly with the same device counts as one violation rather than thousands, and the Seventh Circuit ruled in April 2026, in Clay v. Union Pacific Railroad, that the change reaches lawsuits filed before it.

Illinois PIPA and shipper requirements

Driver's license numbers, Social Security numbers and payroll data for drivers and warehouse staff are personal information under the Personal Information Protection Act, which requires reasonable security and breach notice, with notice to the Attorney General when more than 500 Illinois residents are affected. Large shippers often add their own security questionnaires and contract terms on top, and we answer those with the same documented controls. This is general information, not legal advice.

Common Questions

Logistics Companies in Chicago: FAQs

What does IT support cost for a logistics company in Chicago?

We charge per user per month after an assessment. For logistics companies the drivers are the number of buildings and how much floor area needs Wi-Fi coverage, the count of scanners, tablets and printers, how many EDI and integration connections need monitoring, overnight and weekend support beyond monitoring, and whether an internal IT person stays involved. New access points, cabling coordination and system migrations are quoted separately. You are never locked into a multi-year contract.

How does IT support work for Chicago logistics companies?

Our Brooklyn engineers do the whole job remotely. We configure and ship network equipment and devices, your staff or contractors install them, and we manage everything from there: Wi-Fi tuning, firewall rules, device enrollment, patching, security monitoring and backups. Monitoring and emergency service run 24/7; the help desk is staffed seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time. There are no NetSys engineers on site in Illinois, and we are clear about that from the first call.

Can you fix Wi-Fi dead spots in a warehouse remotely?

Most of the time, yes. Managed access points report signal strength, interference and client roaming, so we can see where scanners struggle and change channels, power levels and roaming settings remotely. When the fix needs hardware, such as an extra access point at the end of an aisle or an antenna moved above the racking, we specify the exact location and model, ship it configured, and your contractor mounts it. We then confirm coverage from the dashboard and with a scanner test by your team.

What does CTPAT expect from our cybersecurity?

Under criterion 4.1, written cybersecurity policies and procedures based on a recognized framework, plus evidence that they are followed. We back the written policy with the controls that make it true: individual accounts and multifactor sign-in, malware protection, patching, backups, firewall rules, an incident response plan and staff training. The policies are written in plain language for your operation, and records such as patch reports and backup tests stay ready for a validation.

How do we protect load board and carrier accounts from fraud?

Treat them like bank accounts. Every user gets an individual login with multifactor sign-in, shared accounts move into Keeper with access by person, and staff who leave lose access the same day. Mailboxes get impersonation filtering and alerts on new forwarding rules. Any request to change a carrier's payment details or a pickup instruction is confirmed by calling a number already on file. We also review who can create carriers in your systems and log those changes.

Do you support our warehouse and transportation management systems?

We support the infrastructure they run on: servers or cloud connections, the network, scanners and printers, user accounts and backups, and we work with the software vendors on their side of any problem. We do not configure the applications' internal workflows. When a vendor needs remote access for an upgrade, we provide it through a controlled, recorded session and remove it afterward.
