IT Support for Law Firms in Chicago, IL
Chicago litigators file electronically in Cook County and the Northern District, transactional lawyers move money through trust accounts, and every firm holds privileged material that clients expect to stay private. From Brooklyn, and entirely remotely, NetSys keeps that practice's technology in order: a hardened Microsoft 365 tenant, matter files with controlled access, watched laptops and backups that restore.
The short answer
NetSys provides IT support and cybersecurity for law firms in Chicago, from solo practitioners near the Daley Center to 40-lawyer firms in River North and suburban practices near the county's district courthouses. Everything happens remotely: our engineers take your staff's calls, secure sign-in through Entra ID and Conditional Access, run Microsoft 365, ThreatDown, Barracuda, Keeper and Datto or Veeam backups, and keep the document management system's clients and connections healthy. We do not send engineers on site in Chicago; laptops ship ready through Intune and Windows Autopilot. Firms are billed per user per month from an assessment, without a long-term commitment.

Practicing law in Chicago, from the Daley Center to Dirksen
Chicago legal work centers on a few blocks of the Loop: the Circuit Court of Cook County at the Daley Center, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in the Dirksen Federal Building on Dearborn Street, and the American Bar Association's headquarters a short walk north at 321 North Clark Street. The county court also sits in suburban district courthouses such as Skokie, Rolling Meadows and Bridgeview, and many small firms practice near them. Filing is electronic. Cook County made e-filing mandatory for nearly all civil cases on July 1, 2018 through the statewide system, so a firm with a dead internet circuit or a broken PDF workflow cannot meet a deadline. Public bodies here have learned how attackers treat legal data: in April 2021 the Illinois Attorney General's office confirmed a ransomware attack, and the group behind it posted documents taken from the office's network. Client confidentiality in Chicago rests on the same basics as anywhere, applied without gaps.
How a Chicago firm is supported remotely
Our engineers work from Brooklyn and reach your systems over secure, logged remote sessions. NinjaOne keeps every laptop and server patched, ThreatDown watches each endpoint with analysts behind it, and IT Glue documents the firm's systems, vendors and procedures so any engineer can answer for your environment. Monitoring and emergency service run 24/7; the help desk is staffed seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time, or 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central, which covers early motion calls and late filings. NetSys does not send engineers on site in Illinois. When a new associate starts, the laptop is already registered in Autopilot and managed by Intune, with the document management client, Outlook and our security agents on it, and your office administrator or cabling contractor connects printers and network gear we configure. If something critical breaks, we call back within ten minutes and are working on it remotely within thirty.
Matter files, email and the document management system
A firm's risk concentrates in two places: the document management system and the inbox. We keep the document management client current on every machine, manage the server or cloud connection it relies on and work with its vendor when profiles or search break. Ethical walls and matter-level permissions are mirrored in SharePoint and Teams, so a screened lawyer cannot reach the matter through a side door. Email gets Barracuda impersonation filtering, encryption for privileged messages and alerts on forwarding rules. Trust account payments get a written call-back rule, because a forged change to wire instructions on a closing or settlement is one of the costliest frauds a firm can suffer. Phones that read client email are enrolled in Intune with a work profile, so a departing lawyer's personal phone can be cleared of firm data without touching family photos.
When something goes wrong: breach response and recovery
The ABA's Formal Opinion 483 expects lawyers to monitor for intrusions, act promptly to stop a breach, restore systems and tell clients when material client information is involved. That only works if the pieces exist beforehand. We set up logging that shows what an intruder touched, an incident response plan with names and phone numbers kept outside email, and backups that cannot be encrypted or deleted from a compromised account. Microsoft 365 is backed up separately from the tenant, and every quarter we restore a sample matter, email included, to prove it returns intact. Our three-year record covers more than 30 ransomware incidents, each fully recovered, and the clients who had a written recovery plan resumed work within 24 hours. We also coordinate with your breach counsel and cyber insurer from the first call.

Ethics rules and Illinois law for Chicago firms
Illinois Rule of Professional Conduct 1.6(e)
Illinois added paragraph (e) effective January 1, 2016. It reads: "A lawyer shall make reasonable efforts to prevent the inadvertent or unauthorized disclosure of, or unauthorized access to, information relating to the representation of a client." The official comments explain how reasonableness is judged, looking at how sensitive the information is, how likely a disclosure would be without more protection, and what extra safeguards would cost and demand. Comment [19] covers transmitting client information. Rule 1.6 was amended again effective July 1, 2025, so confirm the current text against the Illinois Supreme Court's rules.
ABA Model Rule 1.6(c) and Formal Opinions 477R and 483
The ABA's model rule carries the same reasonable-efforts duty. Formal Opinion 477R (2017) says lawyers may send client information over the internet when they have made reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized access, with extra precautions for highly sensitive matters, and stresses training and vendor supervision. Formal Opinion 483 (2018) covers what lawyers owe clients after a breach, including prompt action to stop it and notice when material client information is involved. ABA opinions are advisory rather than binding in Illinois.
ISBA Advisory Opinion 16-06 on cloud services
The Illinois State Bar Association concluded that a lawyer may use cloud-based services if the lawyer takes reasonable measures to keep client information confidential and protected from breaches. The duty does not end once a reputable provider is chosen; the lawyer must supervise the provider and monitor compliance. We give firms the documentation that supervision needs: where data lives, how it is encrypted, who at the provider can reach it and how backups are tested.
Illinois PIPA and BIPA for the firm itself
Firms are data collectors under the Personal Information Protection Act for client and employee records, so reasonable security and breach notice duties apply, including notice to the Attorney General when more than 500 Illinois residents are affected. Finger-scan timeclocks or door readers bring in the Biometric Information Privacy Act, which requires informed written consent and a publicly available retention policy. Law Firms in Chicago: FAQs
What does IT support cost for a law firm in Chicago?
We assess the firm and then quote a monthly per-user figure. In law practices it moves with the document management system and whether it is hosted or on a local server, the number of offices, e-discovery and litigation support storage, the depth of compliance documentation clients ask for, and whether someone in-house keeps part of IT. A Microsoft 365 migration or document management move gets its own scope and quote. Either side can end the agreement at the close of a month.
How does IT support work for Chicago law firms?
Remotely and in the cloud, from our only office in Brooklyn. Engineers resolve issues through secure sessions, patch and monitor devices centrally and handle vendor tickets for you. Monitoring and emergency service run 24/7; the help desk is staffed seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time. We do not send anyone to your office. Laptops ship preconfigured through Autopilot, and your staff or cabling contractor connects equipment we configure in advance.
How do you help a firm meet Illinois Rule 1.6(e)?
We turn reasonable efforts into controls you can describe: multifactor sign-in on every account, Conditional Access tied to managed devices, encryption on laptops and phones, email filtering and encryption, endpoint detection and response, separated permissions for screened matters, staff training and tested backups. We document each control and its status, so when a client's outside counsel guidelines or an insurer asks how you protect information, the answer is specific and current.
Do you support our document management system and e-filing?
Yes. We keep the document management client, its add-ins and the server or cloud connection healthy, and we work its vendor's support line when the problem sits in their product. For e-filing we keep the PDF tools, scanners and browser settings working and make sure filings can still go out over a backup connection if the office circuit fails. We do not change an application's internal configuration without its vendor.
Can an Illinois firm keep client files in the cloud?
The ISBA's Opinion 16-06 says yes, provided the lawyer takes reasonable measures to keep the information confidential and keeps supervising the provider after choosing it. In practice that means knowing where the data is stored, who can reach it, how it is encrypted and backed up, and what the contract says about breaches. Microsoft 365 configured with strong security settings, plus independent backup, is how we usually put that into practice for small and mid-size firms.
Do you offer penetration testing for law firms?
Yes. Our one free offer is an external penetration test, run remotely against the internet-facing systems we list together in a written scope, typically the firewall, remote access portals and mail-facing services. The report shows what an outsider can find and reach. Internal testing, phishing simulations and a full security assessment are scoped and quoted separately, and the results feed the remediation plan we track with your managing partner.
