Retiring Windows Server 2016 before January 2027
Microsoft ends extended support for Windows Server 2016 on January 12, 2027, and Windows 10 has been out of support since October 14, 2025. Many small offices still run a 2016 server in a closet for file shares, a print queue, an old accounting database or the domain controller everyone signs in through. After the deadline it stops receiving security patches, which matters to insurers and to prime contractors asking about unsupported systems. The consulting work is deciding what replaces each role. File shares usually move to SharePoint and OneDrive, sign-in moves to Entra ID, and a line-of-business database either moves to an Azure virtual machine or to the vendor's hosted version. Where a server truly has to stay, we size a replacement and plan the cutover for a weekend, with a rollback ready.
CMMC and NIST readiness for San Antonio defense suppliers
Joint Base San Antonio, the Sixteenth Air Force at Lackland and the aerospace tenants at Port San Antonio give the region a deep bench of defense subcontractors, and many of them handle controlled unclassified information. The rules shifted this year: on July 13, 2026 the Department of War suspended CMMC Phase 2, the third-party Level 2 certification that was due to become a condition of award on November 10, 2026, and a reform task force is reviewing the program. What still applies is DFARS 252.204-7012, NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2, Level 1 and Level 2 self-assessments, and a current SPRS score with an affirmation. The program scales with size: password policies and staff training under 20 employees, the CIS Controls Implementation Group 1 from 20 to 99, and conformity with a recognized framework such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ISO/IEC 27001 or SOC 2 from 100 to 249. Separately, a company whose cloud product handles data for Texas state agencies needs TX-RAMP certification through the Department of Information Resources before an agency can contract for it.
