IT Support for Architecture and Engineering Firms in Dallas, TX

Dallas design firms produce some of the heaviest files any office handles: federated BIM models, laser scans, rendering output and permit sets submitted through the city's DallasNow portal. NetSys manages the workstations, storage, remote access and security behind that work for architecture and engineering studios across Dallas, entirely through remote management from our Brooklyn office.

The short answer

NetSys provides IT support for architecture and engineering firms in Dallas: GPU workstation management, project storage on Azure Files, SharePoint or a local server, Azure Virtual Desktop for staff who open large models from home, Microsoft 365, ThreatDown endpoint protection, controls for electronic seals and federal CUI, and backups that keep every issued revision. Support is fully remote: we do not send engineers to Dallas studios, and workstations ship configured through Windows Autopilot. Engineers answer the help desk 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central daily, and agreements are priced per user per month and run month to month.

What Dallas design work demands from IT

Dallas is home base for large national practices such as HKS, headquartered downtown on North St. Paul Street, and for many smaller architecture, structural, MEP and civil studios in Uptown, the Design District, Deep Ellum and the suburbs north along the Dallas North Tollway. Their projects run from hospitals and sports venues to mixed-use towers in Uptown, where the Goldman Sachs campus and Bank of America Tower at Parkside are under way, and warehouses in the southern Dallas County inland port. City permitting moved to the DallasNow system on May 5, 2025, after the old system went offline from April 25 to May 4 while data migrated, a reminder that submission deadlines depend on systems the firm does not control. Engineering firms on public work also deal with the Army Corps of Engineers' Fort Worth District, which awards architect-engineer contracts for military and civil works across the region. Each of those clients asks a different security question, and a firm's IT has to answer all of them with the same staff, the same network and the same project folders.

Remote support for studios, home offices and job sites

Design firms tend to assume CAD support needs someone at the desk. Most of it does not. A license server that stopped answering, a graphics driver that broke viewport performance, a plotter queue stuck the night before a submission or a model that will not sync are all handled through NinjaOne and a remote session. We do not send engineers to Dallas, so new workstations are ordered with matched GPUs and memory, enrolled through Autopilot with certified driver versions and your design applications, and drop-shipped. Your office manager or an IT-minded drafter connects monitors and plotters while our engineer stays on the call. Field staff carry managed tablets and phones, so site photos and marked-up drawings land in the project folder instead of a personal camera roll. The help desk is staffed 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central, and servers, storage and backups are monitored through the night.

Large models, file storage and working from home

Storage design shapes everything else. Small studios do well on SharePoint and OneDrive for documents with a structured project folder for models. Firms with central models and many linked files usually need Azure Files with a local cache, or a file server in the office, so saves stay fast and links stay intact. When staff work from Rockwall or McKinney, Azure Virtual Desktop keeps the model beside its storage and sends only the screen, which avoids dragging gigabytes of model data over a home connection. The office circuit matters as well: symmetrical fiber from AT&T, Spectrum or the former Frontier network that Verizon now owns, checked at your address, is often worth more than a faster workstation. Backups keep every issued set and revision, with retention long enough to answer a claim years after closeout, and restore tests use your largest project, not a sample file.

Seals, CUI and the files clients worry about

Texas engineering rules turn seal files into an IT control. Under 22 TAC 137.37(a)(4), a license holder commits sealing misconduct by letting others reach electronic files that contain their seal or electronic signature unless access is explicitly authorized for particular work, so seal images and signing certificates belong in a location only the licensee can open, behind multifactor authentication, with every access logged. Federal work adds controlled unclassified information, such as drawings of military facilities that arrive with DFARS 252.204-7012 attached. We keep those projects in a separate SharePoint site or enclave with restricted sharing, managed devices only and audit logging. Private owners send vendor security questionnaires too, so we document the controls once and answer from that record. Consultants get expiring links instead of open shares, and outside access ends when the project closes.

The rules that apply

Rules Dallas design firms work under

Engineering seals (22 TAC 137.37)

The Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors treats it as misconduct when a license holder allows others access to electronic files containing his or her seal or electronic signature, unless access is explicitly authorized for particular engineering work. The rule also bars an unlicensed person from using or depicting a seal without the active licensee's express permission. In IT terms that means one owner per seal file, no copies in shared folders, and a log showing who opened it.

NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC on federal projects

Firms holding CUI under Department of War contracts must meet DFARS 252.204-7012 and the 110 requirements of NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2, and keep a current SPRS score with an affirmation. On July 13, 2026 the Department suspended CMMC Phase 2, the third-party Level 2 certification that was due to start November 10, 2026, while a reform task force reviews the program. Level 1 and Level 2 self-assessments remain in force, so ask the prime in writing what flows down.

Texas record handling (Business and Commerce Code 521.052)

Every Texas business must keep reasonable procedures protecting the sensitive personal information it collects, such as employee Social Security numbers and payroll details, and must destroy records it will not retain by shredding, erasing or otherwise making the data unreadable. For a design firm that includes retired workstation drives and plotters with internal storage, which should be wiped or destroyed with a certificate; we arrange that through IT asset disposition. Common Questions

Architecture and Engineering Firms in Dallas: FAQs

Who provides IT support for architecture firms in Dallas?

NetSys supports architecture and engineering firms in Dallas remotely from our office in Brooklyn. We look after CAD and BIM workstations, project storage, remote access, network-connected plotters and scanners, Microsoft 365, security, backups and the vendors behind them. When a design application misbehaves, we open the ticket with its vendor and stay with it until it is resolved. Our engineers have degrees in electrical engineering, electronics engineering or computer science, and agreements run month to month.

How does IT support work for architecture firms in Dallas?

Staff reach the help desk by phone, email or Teams between 3 a.m. and 10 p.m. Central every day, and monitoring plus emergency response run 24/7. Workstations, servers and storage are managed through NinjaOne and Intune, so driver rollouts, license server checks and patching happen without anyone at the desk. NetSys does not send engineers to Dallas studios: replacement workstations ship pre-built, and your staff or cabling contractor connects hardware while an engineer guides them. Deadline nights get the same help desk as any other.

What does IT support cost for an architecture firm in Dallas?

Managed IT is priced per user per month after an assessment, and we do not publish rates. For a Dallas studio the price moves with headcount, the number of high-end workstations, whether models live on a local server, Azure Files or SharePoint, how many people need Azure Virtual Desktop, and whether federal projects require a separate CUI environment. Workstation purchases and projects such as a storage migration are quoted separately after scoping, and the agreement can end on a month's notice.

How do you help Dallas engineering firms handle CUI on federal work?

We start by finding where the CUI actually lives, which is usually a handful of projects rather than the whole firm. Those projects move into a restricted enclave in Microsoft 365 with managed devices, multifactor authentication, audit logging and controlled sharing, and we document each NIST SP 800-171 requirement against the controls running. That keeps the SPRS self-assessment honest and the system security plan current. If third-party CMMC certification resumes, the evidence is already organized for an assessor.

Do you support our CAD, BIM and rendering software?

We support everything those applications depend on: workstation hardware and GPU drivers at the versions the vendor certifies, license servers, project storage, plotters and the network between them. Updates are scheduled outside deadline weeks, rendering nodes stay patched, and we handle vendor support tickets when the application itself is at fault. Licensing and the design software contracts stay with your firm, and unvetted plug-ins never go onto production machines.

Can our staff open big models from home?

Yes, with the right setup. Pulling multi-gigabyte models over a home connection is slow and can damage central files, so staff who work from home regularly get an Azure Virtual Desktop session next to the project storage, or a managed workstation with a local cache synced to Azure Files. Either way the data stays in storage we back up and control, sign-in requires multifactor authentication, and personal computers never touch project folders.
